Aside from the occasional late-night trips down the grocery aisle at the CVS across the street from my apartment building, I am a fairly predictable grocery shopper. I tend to hit Trader Joe's at least once a week and then supplement those groceries with a trip to the farmers market or a local produce stand. On a weekly basis, the top 10 things you will almost always find me buying are yogurt, milk, cheese (I like my dairy products), tofu, quinoa, light coconut milk (a recent obsession), fruit (nectarines, plums and apples these days), grass-fed beef, arugula and tomatoes (not a very titillating list I'm afraid). Of course, there's always loads more coming in and out of my kitchen than that (I'm a person who buys a new variety of salt nearly every month) but those are the basics.
What are the 10 things that you find yourself buying most often? Snack foods? Bread and peanut butter? Kraft singles? Share the dirty details of your grocery bags.

2) Bakery. I am a sucker for interesting bread and I'll try virtually all crackers, although my always-have standard is Ak-Mak, carried by Trader Joe's, thankfully.
3) Fruit. Berries, citrus fruits, and I think I keep the banana boats sailing by buying and throwing out bananas as soon as they are too spotty.
4) Salty. Crunchy salty things. Usually Newman's Own Protein Pretzels, but my new madness is Glad Corn. That stuff is made by the devil and dusted with crack and I crave it nightly. Or Stacy's Sea Salt Pita Chips.
5) Protein. Chicken, fish, shellfish, and lots of Black Forest Ham, my favorite lunch meat. Edamame pods always available for snacking.
6) No reason to have these items but I always do: Diet soft drinks, Izze Soft Drinks, Lipton Peach Iced Tea, Crystal Light To Go, and assorted beverages, Frozen Popsicles.
7) Lots of whatever my current week's obsession is. This week? All flavors Indiana, particularly the scrumptious Veggie Masala Burgers from TJs, canned Daal from Cost Plus, Tastee Bite packages, and Basmati rice.

Hey K, you mentioned Ak-mak crackers. Those are my favorite crackers in all the world. Have you ever tried them dipped in yogurt? Heaven!

8-20-2007 @1:58PM K said... Nope, never have! I always have Greek Yogurt on hand (see my list), so perhaps I shall. I think the Black Diamond brand of extra sharp white cheddar from Canada is pretty damn perfect, and on top of Ak-Maks -- my favorite lunch. Bonus? Ak-Maks are both economical and really low calorie. Get them at TJ's people. Whole Grain, toasted with sesame seeds, slightly sweet, not salty.

Can you tell I bake obsessively? Literally not a trip goes by that at least one of these isn't on my list. Usually two. Frequently three.
6) local fruit - whatever's ripe, preferably organic, but short of citrus and tropicals, it has to come from Washington/OR/BC and be seasonal. Citrus, I always try to by RipeToYou.
7) fresh fish - line-caught, local, sustainable
8) ice cream
9) trader joe's frozen brown rice - a totally guilty secret, but it goes with everything, it takes two minutes to nuke, and it is a better fast side choice than virtually any other starch
10) Fresca. Usually, 5 12-packs at a time.
