60th Annual Maine Lobster Festival - Part Five, Of Cod and Lobsters

We're getting close to the end of the Lobster Festival, but there's still time for some more pics of all the great food, people, and weird events. It's interesting how really good all the festival food is. The purveyors get the freshest local ingredients they can. I have watched behind the scenes at many of the food booths and have seen the ingredients used, and the hard work being done, as they continually prep and make the food to order.

The fried seafood booth starts with fresh scallops, shrimp, etc. and breads them and fries them as you wait. It's frantic in there, but also choreographed as the family practically dance around each other as they work.

Today there are several events that I plan to attend. One is the children's cod carry contest, the other is the children's lobster eating contest. I have been warned that both can get pretty messy and to stand back so I don't end up wearing anything that I would prefer not too. I'll stick to the milder pics because some of them are a bit messy for Slashfood.

Photos after the jump.

A nice snack of seafood chowder while waiting in line for the lobster tent.

Cooking with style.

Making the Chowdah.

Stay away from my pizza.

Don't drop that drink.

Mmmm.... Candy!

Places to go, fried dough to eat.

Back to the lobster tent. I just love walking through here all day taking pics.

She's having some fun with her food.

Look in the background.

This couple sure likes to play with their food.

The Children's cod fish carry. The young kids have to put on boots, jacket, and hat then carry an enormous, slippery, slimy, bedraggled cod from one end of the stage to a boat on the other; and then get themselves and the fish into the boat, fastest time wins.

The fish was bigger than this little one and she had to slowly drag it back to the boat.

That look pretty gross in there.

The children's lobster eating contest is about to begin. The kids have to shell the lobster, and eat the claws, knuckles, and tail. Fastest wins, and some times when the shell is a bit tough some foot stomping starts happening and the juices fly. I had to jump back a few times and cover my camera lens so I didn't end up covered in lobster innards.

What the heck am I supposed to DO with this thing?

On your mark, get set, GO.

He's got that professional two hand style going on.

This girl took her time and enjoyed every single scrap of her lobster. She even dug out all the small craps that she didn't have to. She may not have won the contest, but she got a great free meal.

Whoa... hang in there guys.

The boy on the right is starting to get a little sick of lobster, but he pulled through and finished... eventually.

Say Lobstah.

No woinder everyone's getting the fried dough.

I just had to get an order of these fried to order crispy and tasty potato chips. Then I drenched them with malt vinegar and lots of salt. Oh man were they good!

Dude! Don't drop your ice cream.

Tip of the Day

December may have peppermint bark, but have you thought to incorporate the taste of autumn into white chocolate with a rich pumpkin swirl?
