I don't watch a whole lot of TV, but last summer I was totally glued to Alton Brown's summer road trip show, Feasting on Asphalt. So you'll understand just how thrilled I was to learn that he's done it again this summer, this time hitting the road in the Mississippi Gulf states. The Food Network is rerunning last summer's series all week, in order to get us fans all juiced up and ready for the new season. The first fresh episode premieres Saturday night at 9 pm and I believe that it will deliver all the grit, fried food and gorgeous views that I've come to expect from AB's forays into reality food television. I can't wait.

Wasn't last nights episode just a repeat of last season? I thought the premiere wasn't till Sunday.

Yes, they're showing FOA I this week in place of Good Eats. The series premiere of FOA II is this weekend. According to the Food Network's website, it's Saturday night at 9 Eastern.
I agree that it's a wonderful show. Remember that AB was a filmmaker before he was a chef. FOA looks and sounds good because of his 'past life.'

Joshua, you are correct. Apparently I have a crappy memory for tv, because it didn't even occur to me that I was watching something that I had already seen. I've adjusted the post to accurately reflect when the show will be on. Thanks for catching my error.

I love Alton! I'm completely addicted to Good Eats, and I was so excited when he became commentator for Iron Chef America. Although I missed the last season of Feasting on Asphalt, I'm ridiculously excited about this season (especially after watching reruns last night). =)

AWESOME! I loooved the first run, and was really sad when it ended and I didn't think any more were coming. And what a great idea, going up the Mississippi. The Louisiana bits should be REALLY interesting.

RE: Richard Glitter
There is some stuff they don't/can't teach you in the beginner's MSF (which I took twice)--we talked about gravel, but nada experience. Even without a rabbit jumping out in front of me, I've had patches of gravel nearly send me down, even at low speeds. Care to elaborate on the letting the tail wander thing? I'm only 7 months in to constant riding--I could use the advice!

Excellent show. Too bad he broke his shoulder or whatever last time. Looked like a bit of a newb-rider mistake. Some loose gravel and his back end just washed out. Probably some erratic throttle input. Gotta keep those pegs weighted in the loose stuff and just let the rear tire wander around, with smooth constant low throttle.
I'm not surprised he wants another go at it, since it was obviously cut short from the fall. Besides, if he's a rider (and BMW is putting up some NICE bikes for him ;) why wouldn't he take full advantage to go out riding the country and making money off it!

Strangely, your reply to my message was dated 6 days prior to it...
Anyway, you want to weight the pegs, don't put your feet down to try and steady yourself, all that will do is take weight off the bike and decrease your traction. Don't brake and don't accel or decel at all, constant low throttle, and when you feel the back end wallowing around (left to right) just allow it to, it wont go too far one way or the other, it's natural.
Thats of course advice for riding on loose consistent gravel. When you are on the street and hit a patch, especially while leaned over in a corner, its a whole different ballgame. If you're in a corner and hit a patch, just let the rear end swing out and hope you don't catch traction too hard when it regrips the road, or it can highside you right off the bike.

How many miles have you put on a motorcycle?
I rode my 1980 Honda 750F SS 80,000 miles from 1980 to 1986. Plus I ate at a lot of places while out riding. Once I drove down some gravel road that lead to the Buffalo River in Arkansas, which went to some trail, where you could then hike to see a tall waterfall. That road was so steep, I would have turned around, but once started down, you couldn't turn around, and I just went down in 1st gear. Luckily I made it back out of there.
