(News flash - some like 'em waaaaayyyy hotter!)
Special to AOL from our intern Jean Morrow
To the rest of the world, they may be "Buffalo wings," but to Buffalonians, they're "chicken wings."
They are always served with blue cheese dressing on the side, and no one orders just plain old pizza in

The barbecue chicken wing is another story. For barbecue chicken wings, I always head to LaNova Pizzeria and Wing Company on the West Side of Buffalo. LaNova has perfected the barbecue chicken wing, served dripping with dark brown sauce. They are as messy as they are delicious.
Fans crave the chicken wings from LaNova and the Anchor Bar so badly that both restaurants offer overnight delivery to anywhere in the country. (You can order bottled chicken wing sauce too!) If you are going to splurge for the overnight delivery, there is one occasion for which wings are a necessity -- Sunday football games. When crowded around a television set on a freezing cold Sunday in
My friend's family business, Will Poultry, bottled and developed the official recipe for the Anchor Bar's Sauce about five years ago. She let me in on a little secret -- until recently, there was no branded recipe for chicken wing sauce. The Anchor Bar, and other restaurants, used their own version of an original, unofficial recipe: Frank's Red Hot Sauce and liquid butter.

Wings are so good but I have a question for the masses: Can wings that deviate from the classic Buffalo style be compared in greatness that these wings have?
I see spots that offer different varieties of wings and sauces, Lemon Pepper, Terriyaki, BBQ and more. Some of the best wings that I've had come at Chinese Take Out where they are crispy asian flavored wings with a sweet hot sauce.
Now don't get me wrong, the classic in my eyes still rules supreme but do these other wings deserve notice?
Also, what do you call the friend that you split an order of wings with and they take only the drummies (the mini drum sticks) and leave you with the flat, bi-bone wings that you need to strip between your teeth? I know one thing, they aren't called friend for long.

With the right sauce, bbq wings can be yummy. In fact, I'd take a mediocre bbq wing to a mediocre buffalo wing any day. When perfectly crisp and fiery hot, though, nothing beats those buffalo wings to my mind.
With regard to the drummie question (also called lollipop wings at some NY restaurants), I would call them 'second best' friends.

If the wings don't come from the Anchor Bar, then they are just copies, hoping to pass. The best pizza to compliment them is from Bocce's. And if you are really hungry, the Beef on Weck is from Swiston's. So when I travel to other parts of the country please don't insult me by trying to tell me they are the "real thing". The only "REAL THING" is found in the Queen City..Buffalo, New York..

I too, was also born and raised in the Buffalo N.Y. area. Born B4 the WWII;
the Anchor Bar was in existance, as far as I know. However, as stated the Buffalo Wings from Anchor Bar did not come into existance until 1964. I had by that year; left Buffalo 3 years prior. Moved to S. Ca. with ojur #1 daughter.
Therefore, I didn't have my first weeks, til later in the 60's when I was in Buffalo for a wedding. I actually prefer the small legs; rather than the wing itself. I like the mild but don't necessary need the celery nor the blue cheese. I prefer to dip miy "lil leg" in Ranch Dresssing. Sometimes, depending on the strenth of the sause; I don't even bother to dip.
Go Bills.

Anchor Bar wings in Buffalo NY are not so great, believe it or not. I was sorely disappointed as I just had to go there to taste the original Buffalo Wings....

I was born in Buffalo but was raised in Maryland. Fortunately I still have a lot of family there so I am up there pretty often. I keep hearing about LaNova's pizza but I can't imagine it being better than Bocce's.

Pam your right on. Wings from anywhere else just don't cut it. I hate when they call them Buffalo wings. Bocce has the BEST pizza. And I think Duff's wings are great, they tie with Anchor. Its a close call for me. Oh and Anderson's Beef on Weck is great.

Anchor Bar is living off their reputation. For wings that have some meat, you must try Brennans, Hemingway's or Gabriel.s Gate. LaNova, way too greasy.
Try the Cajun Rubbed at Brennans

So true - I went to Bryant & Stratton Business Institute located across the street at that time. Many plates of wings. Also on the same side of the street was Mary Ann's Restaurant - first curly fries. LONG thin fry from one potato until it was nothing. SO GOOD!!
