Growing up in Portland, OR, when it came to drinking water, we were pretty lucky. The water that came out of the tap was clear and tasty. One of the hardest things to adjust to when I moved to Philadelphia was the fact that the water that came out of my kitchen sink didn't taste too great. For a while I bought bottled water, but my bank account couldn't handle that expense and I didn't like the amount of plastic I generated, especially living in an apartment building with sketchy recycling practices. It also felt wrong to me to buy bottled water, when I live in one of the few countries in the world where the tap water is pretty much universally safe for general consumption. It appears that all across the country, upscale restaurants are making similar choices, leaving behind the bottled water and serving filtered still or carbonated water. Serious Eats has a nice round-up of recent establishments that are turning to the tap and choosing not serve bottled water, despite the financial sacrifice it entails.

I personally use one of those Brita water filters containers - my water is always tasty and clean, and I don't go through a million plastic bottles.

Bottled water is a crock anyway; if you've ever seen
Mythbusters, Penn and Teller's Bullshit! or just looked on the back of your fancy shmancy water; it comes from a municipal supply. IE; it's the same stuff you get out of the tap.

I always drink tap water, in fact recent studies have shown that most Americans drink more than one glass of tap water per day. The public opinion most be favoring tap water now.

Well, I don't how many people know this, but, tap water has a higher standard of purity than bottled water. Tap water is governed by the EPA and has a lower parts-per-million allowable than bottled water which is governed by the FDA.
Now, the only wrench that gets thrown into this logic is how clean the pipes are going into your domicile. Some guy with ass-crack showing governs that thing.

Of course, bottled water starts to look better when you tap water is brown and smells like a two week old egg. Our water has been like that for MONTHS! The keeps saying is safe...sure it is. Would you eat something brown that smelled like that ? I think not!

Dave, when it comes to water that is discolored or stinky, I would absolutely go for bottled water. I was really only speaking about tap water that is potable but that people eschew.

For the ones that are lucky enough to have clean fresh smelling water......Cheers. I dont buy bottles water. Fill glass with ice and a squeeze of fresh lemon. I have lived else where in the same city and the water was terrible everyone complained soe i bought a filter for my kitchen faucet. I have lived other places and the water had to run for several minutes to turn clear just to bath. Not going to name any states but when I travel I take bottle water from home with me to drink. My kids use to get sick traveling as babies and older and I finally figured out the problem. Also check the bottle to see where the water is from. Thats why I buy the bottled water from home not where Im traveling.
