I've had this particular type of fudge many times since I was a kid, but I had no idea it was called "Penuche Fudge."
According to Wikipedia, it's a New England fudge (and parts of the south) made with butter, milk, brown sugar, and vanilla, and tastes a lot like caramel. It's lighter than regular fudge.
Here's a recipe from recipezaar.com made with walnuts, and here's one from AllRecipes made with pecans.

My grandmother made penuche when I was a young child. I like it better than any other fudge except homemade Hershey Cocoa Fudge that my grandfather made. They were both great cooks, especially in the desert department.

Oh yeah, penuche is good. I never thought about it tasting like caramel, but that sounds about right. I hate caramel's texture -- I feel like my teeth are being destroyed immediately by it, for some reason -- but I like the taste. Mmm, penuche. Highly recommended if you've never had it. I also didn't realize it was a New England thing. Kind of like brown sugar fudge.

Sounds very similar to a pecan praline recipe. The main difference (other than the lack of nuts) is that the fudge is cooled as a block and cut apart and pralines are spooned out as individual dollops while the mixture is still warm and cooled separately.
I can never manage to get a full batch of pralines spooned out before the mixture cools too much - this looks like a good way to sidestep the problem entirely.
