I don't think I've ever had a corn fritter. Or maybe I have. Is there another name they go by here in the Northeast?
This Wikipedia page says that a fritter is "any kind of food coated in batter and deep fried." Is that accurate? That seems like a rather broad definition to me. If that's the case, I guess I have had fritters, though definitely not of the corn variety.
Anyway, it's National Corn Fritters Day. Here's a basic recipe for corn fritters, and here's one for Southern Style Corn Fritters. How about a Corn Fritter Casserole? And if you're wondering what corn fritters would taste like with maple syrup, why not make them Vermont style?

Mmm...corn fritters. That takes me back. I'll have to try the Vermont style, as I'd imagine the sweet syrup would go well with the savory fried corn.

Hushpuppies usually don't have corn in them - they normally are just fried batter, sometimes with onions or spices. Not that there's anything wrong with fried batter! Corn fritters are a wonderful thing when done right. They are sweet (from the corn) but savory at the same time. Accompanied by a somewhat spicy dipping sauce they are truly one of life's best guilty pleasures. There used to be a restaurant here in Georgia that made carrot fritters that were also absolutely one of the most spectacular things I have ever eaten. Here in he South there are no shortage of recipes for fritters of every variety. If you have never tried fritters, treat yourself to some soon. You won't regret it.

Corn Fritters are not Hush Puppies... Corn Fritters use a "doughnut-like" dough. In my experience Hush Puppies use a "cornbread-like" dough. The corn fritters I know are sometimes sprinkled with sugar but I have never seen them with syrup (grew up in Florida). Yeah, fritters are good.

I've had corn fritters for as long as I can remember...a recipe passed down from my great grandmother (from New Jersey). The ones we've always had are more pancake like in shape and texture, and we always ate with butter and syrup...just like panckaes.
