Eat like an ape - lose weight?

monkeysLate last year, a TV production company filmed a new reality program in England. Nine volunteers set up camp in the Paignton Zoo in Devon, next to the ape house and for 12 days, ate like the apes did. This meant that they consumed nearly 11 pounds of fruits and vegetables a day as part of a three-day rotating diet that was designed by a nutritionist. They also were given small amounts of honey and nuts, and during the second week ate some cooked fish.

On average, each of the participants lost 10 pounds and experienced significant reductions in blood pressure and cholesterol. The majority of the participants signed up because they were experiencing health concerns and needed to do something drastic in order to improve their health.

I realize that this is sort of old news, but I just heard about it and I found it intriguing. I'm also very curious if this will become one of the many reality TV shows exported to the United States. Americans are willing to try a variety of drastic measures to lose weight. Will eating like an ape be one of them?

Yes, organic is best, but a diet comprised of commercially quick-frozen raw vegetables is far preferable to processed foods, and is also extremely convenient and inexpensive. Try a breakfast of mixed frozen vegetables covered with pasta sauce and some cheese; costs way less than a dollar, takes less than 5 minutes to make (using a microwave), provides nearly all of the value of the vegetables, and starts your day with a meal that won't make you suffer a carb crash by mid-morning. It is workable for almost anyone, and way cheaper than a box of cereal!

We all know that we can live better and longer by consuming more fruits and vegetables- but many of us are put off by the time we think it takes to prepare our own food. Plus, after years of eating and drinking foods full of high fructose corn syrup and msg our taste buds are SHOT! I have been reading The Metabolic Plan by Dr. Stephen Cherniske and I am now drinking a full spectrum cellular renewal formula that in 3 ounces gives me the equivalent of 10 servings of fruits and vegetables. Juice most of your fruits and veggies if you like, and add supplemental things like fiber, grains, nuts and legumes. Try things like Scottish or Irish Oatmeals, fresh kale sprinkled with olive oil and fresh cracked pepper. We need to get back to eating more plants and sustain healthy lives. Search online for Jay's recipes, they're free, and use them as you like. Because juicing and eating raw fruits and veggies will fill you up, you'll stay fuller longer because of all the great nutrients you're getting. Buy organic when you can, and still treat yourself once in a while to something you really like. Just don't make a daily diet of it. Heat and cooking kills any nutritional value from foods. Buy raw honey: Orange blossom, Alfalfa, Wild Mountain, Buckwheat, Fireweed, Tupelo. I used to sell apple blossom honey from my hives, it sold out every time, as they were located in apple orchards. Eat fresh walnuts from the baking aisle, not from a can of Planters. I eat Scottish oatmeal with honey and walnuts and wheat germ very morning and I love it. Here's to you good health. Enjoy!

SAME GOES FOR HUMANS. JUST BECAUSE OUR HUMAN DIGESTIVE TRACKS CAN BETTER HANDLE SUCH BAD FOOD, DOESN'T MEAN WE SHOULD HANDLE IT. WE SHOULD GO BACK TO THE WAY OUR ANCESTORS ATE. PEOPLE NEED TO EAT MORE NATURALLY AND STOP EATING FOR TASTE AND MORE FOR HEALTH. ONCE YOU DO THAT, HEALTHY FOODS ARE MORE DELICIOUS AND YOU CRAVE IT MORE.

DOGS LOVE DELI MEAT OR WHATEVER HUMANS EAT, BECAUSE THEY TASTE & SMELL BETTER THAN DOG FOOD. BUT IT ISN'T NECESSRILY HEALTHIER. ALSO, IF YOU EAT MORE HEALTHY FOOD, YOU'RE NOT GONNA WANT TO EAT AS MUCH IN GENERAL. THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF FAST FOOD AND JUNK FOOD TASTING GOOD IS SO THAT YOU EAT IT MORE AND MORE AND CRAVE IT.

I HAVE JUNK FOOD AND FAST FOOD ALL AROUND ME, BUT I DON'T EAT IT BECAUSE I KEEP MYSELF STUFFED AND MY BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS NORMAL WITH HEALTHY FOOD.

AND NOTHING'S QUICK. IT TAKES TIME. AND RELAX. EVERYTHING'S MENTAL. YOU MAY THINK YOU WANT THAT SECOND SERVING OF CAKE, BUT YOU'RE THINKING TOO MUCH. STOP THINKING TOO MUCH ABOUT EVERYTHING. YOU'RE LIFE'LL BE MUCH EASIER.

ALSO BUDGET YOUR MONEY SO THAT YOU SPEND MORE ON MATERIAL ITEMS OR NECESSETIES OR THAT NEW CAR OR VACATIONS OR SPAS OR FUN EXERCISE ACTIVITIES OR THE MOVIES OR JUST GO FOR A LONG DRIVE, RATHER THAN FOOD. I KEEP MYSELF BUSY ALL THE TIME, ESPECIALLY WITH FUN ACTIVITIES.

IF YOU'RE OVERWEIGHT, EVERYONE HAS TO DIET IN ORDER TO LOSE WEIGHT. AND YOU CAN GO BACK TO EATING YOUR FAVORITE FATTENING FOODS, BUT IN ALOT OF MODERATION. I LOVE STEAK, BUT I EAT IT RARELY. I LOVE ANYTHING MADE OF POTATOES, BUT I AVOID IT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND EAT BROWN RICE INSTEAD. I EAT MORE FIBER RICH FOODS AND FIBER SUPPLEMENTATION TO KEEP MYSELF FULL. I ALSO EAT PROTEIN. I LOVE GREENS. AND IF I WANT TO ADD FATTENING DRESSING TO MY SALAD, I WILL. IT'S BETTER THAN EATING A BURGER.
JUST BECAUSE I EAT HEALTHY, DOESN'T MEAN I NEED TO COMPLETELY ELIMINATE TASTE.

LIKE I SAID, EVERYTHING'S MENTAL. IF YOU THINK TOO MUCH, TRUST ME, IT'S A BAD IDEA.

I now eat lots of canned red salmon, lots of eggs with deep orange yokes, lots of bananas, green peas every evening and I snack on raw pumpkin seeds all day (flavored with my excellent sea salt and Nature's Way coconut oil). I consider this a major improvement on my ape diet of long ago. I also eat other healthy things as I find them and take an impressive array of food supplements. At 72, I have the health I did at 35, I'm stronger at the gym than at 25 and would look to be quite young were I to color my snow white hair. The apes are good as apes go, but we humans are better when we turn on our far superior brain power. Go people! Never give up!
