Starbucks has been pretty successful in selling Japan on java. The coffee colussus opened its first Japanese shop 10 years ago and now has some 700 units. Now another American behemoth is giving the Seattle-based company a run for its money. McDonald's, which already has a substantial presence in the land of the rising sun, now plans to help the Japanese rise and shine with a new coffee shop concept it's launching at the end of next month. The McCafe is the burger behemoth's first entry into buzzing world of coffee shops. Yesterday Mickey D's Japanese arm announced plans to open 15 McCafes in the Tokyo area on August 29. The hook behind the concept lies in offering lower priced beverages in an effort to draw customers, particularly families. If any bigwigs from McDonald's Japan are reading this allow me to suggest offering a drink called the McMatchaccino at Tokyo's McCafes.

I think Tully's has been a bit more successful in Japan than Starbucks, at least in terms of profitability, thanks to their focus on the suburbs , but the taste for coffee in Japan was established a good 50 years ago, and the first coffee shop appeared in 1889 or so.
Kissaten are the fancy old-school Japanese coffee shops, but the bargain-basement chain Doutor was pervasive long before the Green Mermaid and the Big T started their invasion. Full of chain smokers and students in search of bitter, stale-tasting coffee, Doutor is probably the real target in McDonald's eyes.
If they're seriously targeting families, the suburb-smart Tully's is going to be their primary competitor, not Starbucks.

The LaVazza coffee was excellent, but the McCafe existed in the front half of a McDonalds's, so it wasn't a separate destination. Sad, because the coffee, pastry, and sandwiches were tasty, and it was accessible from the rail-trail.

They have something for everyone. Great idea, great company, and no, I do no own stock and have never worked in one, but I wish I had.

As a volunteer at Dallas/Fort Worth airport I drink both MickeyD and Starbucks depending in which terminal I am located. My potion is coffee with half and half and sugar. In terms of taste they are both good. In terms of cost there is absolutely no comparison. Starbucks is twice as expensive as McD.

I am not a huge fan of McDonald's either (mainly because of their customer service issues). I do hope McD gives Starbucks a run for their money since I have seen Starbucks deliberately build right next to the "Mom and Pop" shop to put them out of business. I also think McD will focus more on quality customer service with the "coffee-shop experiece". This will improve their reputation over-all. Way to go Mickey D's!

They give Starbucks the much needed competition that no-one has been able to give them.

The coffee costs more because they actually pay much more per pound for the beans, which is why the growers are so loyal. They pay a fair wage, offer health insurance and treat their employees with respect. As a happy member of the Starbucks' cult I have my eyes wide open, and like what I see. No other coffee shop can make my: quad.
half caf, %, iced venti latte. They try but fail each and every time. The only way I can get that perfect latte is to visit my neighborhood Starbucks. I only wish we had a drive through closer to my house. Mickey D's will have their customer base but we the Starbucks loyal will not be tempted.
