We all know that eating sushi is not safe for pregnant women. Even cooked fish like tuna and other deep-sea fish are dangerous because of the high levels of mercury.
However, according to Deep Sea News, sushi may be a risk even if you're not pregnant. The blog says that it is safer to simply assume that your fish is polluted, with data from "Got Mercury?" a project of from the non-profit watchdog group Turtle Island Restoration Network. The group is collecting and testing samples of sushi from restaurants in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Chicago.
Deep Sea News reports; "What these studies have found is disturbing. More than 10% of tuna samples contain levels of mercury that shouldn't be eaten by any consumer--man, woman, or child--because they exceed the FDA's "actionable level" of mercury (1.0 ppm). Nearly 70% of sushi tuna samples collected exceed Illinois EPA's special advisory threshold."
Is it a real danger? Is it marketing? Is it some sort of campaign for other purposes other than your health? Who knows. I have taken the warning, but unfortunately, will take the risk. I love sushi.
