The best-looking ice cream treat you've ever seen

watermelon ice cream

After I posted about the Pickle Sickle, I came across the above at superlocal's flickr page. It's a picture of a truly great popsicle from Korea. It's watermelon-flavored, and the "seeds" are actually chocolate chips.

We need something like this in the U.S. Regular popsicles and fudgsicles and those things that look like red, white and blue rocket ships are fine, but this is really a work of art. And doesn't it just look refreshing?

Actually, I'm having a flashback to my childhood. I think I had something like this when I was a kid. I'm not sure if it was on a stick or maybe a treat that was watermelon-slice shaped that came in a box. Anyone else remember something like this or am I thinking of something else?

Friendly's or baskin robbins or some such had a family size watermelon slice in a box that had chocolate chip "seeds." Going back 25-30 years or so. Looked interesting, but insufficiently compelling for an impecunious newlywed to spring for. My wife thought it looked pretty, but knew that my ice cream machine could do better than some commercialised seaweed compromied artificially flavored junk, so we bought a real watermelon and some half&half and had a creative afternoon with enough left over to take to my parents for Sunday dinner next day.

It was a half a log of ice cream and when you sliced it, it looked like a slice of watermelon. It had strawberry inside and a green ice cream "rind". I don't remember if there were chocolate chip seeds or not.
It was pretty good.

It was actually made of sherbet, and the inside was watermelon flavored (with, indeed, chocolate chip "seeds") and it had a lemon-flavored "rind" with a very thin green layer on the outside to make it look like a real watermelon. I presume the green layer was lime, but I can't remember really. I used to LOVE getting that in the summer for my birthday (I'm a july baby - I used to specifically request it for my party!)

You can still get it at Friendly's restaurants and (possibly) grocery stores in New England. Though it doesn't come conveniently on a stick, like this one does.

That "popsicle" looks absolutely scrumptious!

But I don't like the idea of the chocolate seeds! Chocolate: yum. Watermelon: yum. But together? I predict: yuck!

(Is Crabby always this grouchy? Afraid so. After you've finished reading all the fine posts at Slashfood, you'll certainly have better things to do than visit http://crankyfitness.blogspot.com/)

It's on page 2.

Though the chocolate bit might sound weird, in practice, it actually tastes great because the chocolate flavor is not overwhelming at all. These were easily my favorite ice cream/popsicle type thing to eat in Korea [and it gets really hot and humid during the summers there, so cold food consumption is important!]. Ah, the memories...

I'm thinking it was a crescent shaped wedge on a stick, came in a box of about 6 to 8, and there were two other shapes included... I'm thinking banana and a baseball mitt. Reading what I'm writing makes me seem i'm smokin' a good one, but I distinctly remember this watermelon shaped treat... will trying hard-searching with more depth online...
