Tequila makes you gag!??!?!!

Obviously, you haven't had good tequila. Cuervo is not good. Neither is Patron. Cabo Wabo is passable, but barely.

El Tesoro, Los Abuelos, and Herradura are all good tequilas.

Most of the Mexicans I know drink the local brandy, which is excellent and almost unknown outside Mexico. Also, the tequila brand is way overpriced, and it is possible to get agave liquors such as Sotol or Mezcal that are at least as good as tequila for a small percentage of what a top shelf tequla costs. The absolute best agave liquor I ever had was an eleven dollar coconut shaped tourista bottle of Mezcal. It was even better than Herradura. And Sotol silver is only about US 20 a litre.

Mezcal and Sotol are rarely the same liquor as Tequila; typically made from a different species of Agave that carries a distinctly different flavor. Most Mezcals are quite smoky, too, for some reason.

But, yes, there are some excellent Mezcals. And some very bad ones, too. If it has a worm, it is poison.

I have tasted dozens of agave derived liquors and have never found that Mezcal has the same subtlety or variety of flavors as some of the better Tequilas. And, certainly, there are overhyped, overpriced, Tequilas on the market that are not really that great -- Patron immediately comes to mind.

I am sticking with Don Julio also. You find your fave and stick with it for life. Although, back in college, I drank the cheap crap that made me sick because I did not have Don Julio money in those days. So no, I did not stick to Suazo for life, I graduated from College and graduated to Don Julio.
