Happy Independence Day Everyone!
I'm spending my Fourth of July doing what much of the country is doing. Going to the local small town parade, hooting and hollering a bit, and then a huge chicken BBQ. Finally when the day is done and it's getting dark, then it's time to watch the fireworks and go Ooooh and Aaaah as they light up the sky and make you jump from the sound of the explosions.
For me it's the Thomaston, ME celebration; a parade where thousands come with chairs and coolers to line the streets six deep for half a mile. After the parade many of the folks are off for home to tackle either the grill or lobster pot. The others wander over to the celebration food stalls for hot dogs, burgers, French fries, enormous onion rings or blooming onions, flavored shaved ices, and since this is Maine, the obligatory lobster or crab rolls.
I started with a nice "Lobtsa Roll" and my first blooming onion. The first was excellent, the latter was a nightmare. Well I learned my lesson. No more blooming onions for me. I would love to hear what everyone else is eating on this day of the celebration of our Independence and of summer time.

After the jump a pictorial essay of food and people on the Fourth of July.

Have a Happy and Safe Independence Day everyone.

Lobster rolls sounds like a nice change! Im making BBQ ribs, chicken, potato salad, country style string beans and cornbread. Sweet ice tea to wash it down. And homemade pound cake sliced wiht fresh strawberries with fresh whipped cream. Happy fourth and God bless everyone!

Holy cow! I said to myself, Thomaston, that sounds familiar... Googlemap it, and sure enough, I have driven through there many times, as my extended family has a place in Port Clyde, and my Grandfather lived in Cushing. Small freakin' world!

My family is a bunch of southern transplants in Pittsburgh, PA. We have the usual fare- BBQ ribs and chicken, baked beans, cornbread muffins, homemade salsa and cucumber salad, and enough dessert to feed an army! But in tribute to our current hometown, we grill onions and fresh pierogies made by the church-grannies on Polish Hill!

Well sadly I have to say that I have not been able to enjoy or really celebrate the fourth for 6 years. I work in the ice business and the 4th is a very busy time for us, but since the 4th was on a Wed not as many parties and celebrations were held midweek so I was able to enjoy the good old Midwest standards of Brats(yes real meat market ones, not Johnsonville) and homemade hot dogs. Along with potato salad, coleslaw, fruit and various pies. All I am sure very good, although I am not currently eating meat so I can't vouch for those. But don't forget the best part of any BBQ, not food...... Bags!

We were out on my friends boat all day, so we chowed on cut veggies, cheese and pepperoni and brownies...oh, those brownies, so good.. We hauled traps and glory of glories, caught two lobsters! We ended up eating chinese food on the 4th for dinner...the delicious lobster came the next night.
