June is the month for weddings (and wedding cakes)

I saw a preview for the new season of WE's Bridezillas, and I thought two things. One, I'm a guy so why am I watching WE so much lately? And the other thing I thought was, I am never going to have a big wedding if this is what it does to women.

But June is the month for weddings, and congrats to anyone out there who is getting married in the next few weeks. The Boston Globe has an article about one of the most important parts of the reception, the wedding cake. These aren't basic cakes, of course. They're elaborate desserts from shoppes with names like The Chocolate Tarte and Le Beau Gateau.

These people aren't just bakers, they're artists.

Yet I can't help thinking that young couples (or their parents) who spend a fortune on every aspect of their weddings are being foolish. They will need that money later, for so many things.

A gathering of people celebrating the love of a couple--why should it have to be so expensive and complicated? The wedding industry sure loves it though.

(Yes, Crabby is always this grouchy. You probably don't want to visit her at http://crankyfitness.blogspot.com/)

As far as the cake goes, though, it doesn't have to be outrageously expensive or amazingly decorated. we ordered ours from Macrina Bakery here in Seattle, and just went the route of ordering three seperate round whisper cakes and one tuxedo cake. theres your beauty, your utterly deliciousness, and plenty of money left in your pocketbook. all total it only cost us just under $175.

We selected 6 different cakes, and it was a great way for everyone to get up, move around, and mingle with the other guests. Everyone got to try something different and we spent about half of what it would have cost for one of the foofy tiered productions. I would definitely do that again...maybe for our 10th or 25th or something.

On Tuesday, we thought to ourselves, it would be nice to have a cake for after the wedding. I was making lunch, but I'm not much of a baker. We called a local bakery and ordered a cake. The guy on the phone asked if there was a special event, to which my husband told him about the wedding.

"So, let me get this straight," said the baker guy, laughing, "you call on Tuesday to order your wedding cake for Friday. Do you know that people order these things six months in advance?"

Not a problem. It was the best cake I have ever had and they did a great job decorating it to look like a festive wedding cake. I think it was $30 and we had 2/3 of the cake left after feeding 12 people.

For the reception, our families and friends made sweet treats that we put out. They too were good.
