Looks Like Coca Cola is going all out for the "healthy" beverage market. After the introduction of their new product, Diet Coke Plus (vitamin and mineral enhanced Diet Coke), now Coca-Cola has announced its plans to acquire Glaceau (also known as Energy Brands). Glaceau makes Vitamin Water and Smart Water. The acquisition value is $4.1 billion in cash. Maybe people are really starting to understand that carbonated sodas aren't that great for the body. Soft drink sales have been slowing down, which is the reason that the Atlanta-based Coca-Cola, is seeking to add to its portfolio of noncarbonated beverages.

Can someone explain to me how a sugared drink with vitamins added differs from drinking a Coke along with a vitamin pill? It is amount of sugar and empty calories that make ALL of these drinks questionable as something that one would drink all the time.
nutritional data on Glaceau here:

It's still a bad nutritional choice compared to a glass of water and a vitamin pill, but it IS marginally better than a Coke and a vitamin pill, actually. There's no carbonation and no phosphoric acid in this stuff. However, to my taste, it's too sweet. Ick.

I think this deal sucks. Yes, Glaceau has sugar, but that is far better than the truckload of high fructose corn syrup the Coca Cola Company uses in their crappy products.

Since when is carbonation considered bad for you? I rather doubt that seltzer is doing anyone any harm.
For my money, Glaceau's products are substantially worse than Coca-Cola: nobody pretends that Coke is good for you, but Glaceau's entire market strategy is based around convincing people that drinking a 20-ounce bottle of water, dye and high-fructose corn syrup is somehow a healthy choice.

Great. Coke will do to Glaceau what they did to Mad River teas - buy them and remove them from the marketplace. They can't stand the competition. I drink SmartWater for the added electrolytes. With my thyroid condition it's precisely the boost my body needs, especially when I'm exercising. Healthy options for consumers? Not when Coke's around.

To compare coke to Glaceau is a huuuge leap! For one, the Glaceau company doesn't just make juice, it also has flavored/reg. WATER. As for their juice; the caloric intake and sugars alone from 8oz of coke(classic) blows an 8oz of Glaceau out of the water- pretty much about double the amount. Dan happened to choose one of the flavors that had the most sugar per serving...most have 8g per serving. http://www.bevnet.com/reviews/glaceauvitamin/
I'm not saying that G. is super healthy or anything, but it certainly is no coke.
And just as a side, DM, I think a lot of people try to pretend Coke is good for you: Diet Coke, Caffiene free coke, Coke Zero, the new coke plus..I think a lot of people try to pretend coke is good/these products are better for you.
Sorry I don't mean to rant..just sayin. On a side tangent: 4.1 BILLION dollars?!?! Holy sh'moly.

VitaminWater is AWESOME.. And I am in no way a health nut. I began drinking it and liked it versus the super sweet cola's I drank daily and still too much, and as I drank more of it I felt truly better. I never drink water practically, even though I do need it so bad, but Vitamin water is just really that awesome. I hope people will give it a real try, and try the best flavors - DragonFruit ( KaseyKahne #9),and "Revive" are mine becuase they are light, but better then some crystal light junk and have lots of clean appeal to mouthfeel..

I don't understand why they had to start adding sugar to their FruitWater. What a stupid thing to do -- it was the ONE reasonably good-tasting flavored water that didn't have any sweetener added at all. Jeez - I'm just going to stick to seltzer and to heck with the rest. Can't Americans give up the sugar in just ONE product?????

Hey Carol- I agree I'm not much of a fan of most of the flavored waters out there on the market these days. You should try O water (http://www.obeverages.com/) they are pretty much the only ones I like, and they are unsweetened!

here are some vitaminwater facts:
- no dyes, color comes from vegetable and fruit skins
- the sugar used is cyrstalline fructose, fruit sugar. it is like eating a piece of fruit
- no sodium, the electrolytes are calcium, potassium, an magenesium based
- gluten free
- certified circle U kosher (Look it up!!)
- fruit water has 4 grams of sugar and always has had 4 grams of sugar!
read the labels, vitaminwater is not trying to be a "diet" drink, it is another alternative to beverages with high frutose corn syrup and sodium.
how do i know all of this!! i used to work for the company, met the owners and have seen the production process.
