I must admit that I've never really understood or enjoyed mochi, the Japanese glutinous rice cakes that are traditionally given as gifts on New Year's Day. Though I am a big fan of the hilarious mochi scene in Tampopo. But I'm ready to cast aside my aversion to the sticky rice cakes after seeing this image of rows of perfectly formed mochi arrayed like some kind of eerie alien gem stones. I'd even fly to Tokyo to visit the Takashimaya department store where this glamour shot was taken. [via Tastespotting]

I love these things. There's a restaurant in my neighborhood of Boston that serves all kinds of flavors.

These are the "Mochi Creams"! They have about 20+ different flavors - everything from chocolate, red bean to black sesame, red wine. They are thin layer of mochi filled with flavored whipped cream, just as the name suggests. They are delish - just had them this past spring.

Mochi Ice cream is also wonderful. you can get it at trader joes or whole foods (I think). little hand-held rice-coated balls of ice cream. yummy!

I can't get enough of this stuff! I haven't had the ice cream or "cream" variety, but the standard kind filled with anko. Mmm, so good!

I love these things, it's like heaven in a ricecake.
Just be careful when you give them to kids, my younger brother shoved a whole one in his mouth and had brain freeze for like five minutes straight.
I will admit it was funny, but that shit is painful.
Mmmmm Mochi :D
