Burgers

Special to Slashfood from Kat Kinsman

With all due respect to yoga, psychotherapy, and the pharmaceutical industry, some days all I need to achieve inner peace is a great big greasy hamburger. It's a primal experience -- wrapping both hands around a pillow-soft potato roll loaded with a thick, dripping, grill-seared slab of grade-A American beef, opening my mouth, sinking my teeth in and CONSUMING. There's no room left for job angst, calorie fret or relationship woes -- just me and meat, a soft potato roll (no chewy kaiser rolls for me) and, if there's some on hand, a hefty slab of cheese -- the sharper the better.

Once fed, I can more calmly and sanely address the issues at hand, but while the burger's still got at least a bite left, problems just magically melt away.

I take my burgers the same way every time: rare to the point of mooing, with cheese, mustard and, as my pal Lissa liked to say, "an embarrassment of pickles." It's my recipe for tranquility, and for the most part, I'm sticking to it.

Sometimes, though, the exact ingredients just aren't on hand. C'est la vie. There's plenty of joy to be found in a sack of savory, onion-studded White Castle sliders, or a sloppy road-trip Whopper with cheese from the essential pit stop at Burger King (NOT McDonald's, thank you very much). This is food that's meant to be eaten with gusto -- and with your hands. I abandon all notions of daintiness when I burn rubber from the Las Vegas airport to the In-N-Out Burger on Industrial Road. The chain hasn't reached my neck of the woods, and the meaty mustard ooze down my fingers as I savor Double-Double Animal Style feast at a parking-lot picnic table is what tells me that for right now, the rules don't apply. I'm on vacation. I'm free.

I go to Fatburger more ofter because they have homemade lemonaide that is killer, but their butgers are alway hot and messy. They also have about 12 different toppings to choose from. Don't forget to get onion rings too.

Sprinke on white onions and swiss cheese. Sprinkle a quarter cup plain bread crumbs and Lawreys Season salt to taste. I prefer to wear a plastic glove to mix and squeeeze ingredients together thoroughly with one hand. Form 3 burgers
somewhat loosly. sear on both sides in a large hot teflon skillet . 3 minutes on each side for medium rare, still juicy. 6 minutes for well.

They just opened up in Colorado (from everywhere else in the Midwest) and a great ButterBurger is the only way to go. Now remember, we are talking about "chain burger joints" not individual ones. Montana has some of the best individual burgers in the world

I tell you, the best burger I've ever had is in Solon, Ohio, at a small diner called Jim's Open Kitchen. When I was finally able to eat, I had a burger for breakfast there, then went back and had another for lunch. It was a GLORIOUS day!

Obviously there are others but they just opened up in Colorado from everywhere else in the Midwest (burger country) and I make a visit there as often as I can. Now, thats for a chain burger. Individual burger joints includ the Bulldog Saloon in Whitefish, Montana!!

My friends and I have discussed the ideal burger at length, embarassing amounts of time. We came to the conclusion, as only American Men would, that burgers are like Women; sometimes you want the girl next door, sometimes you want the super-glamorous voluptuos-type, or any others iconic type in between. The Big-Mac, a medium-rare Kobe au poivre, or your own backyard grilled burger on Wonder Bread, they are all beautiful intheir own unique way.

Everyone here in the Reno Tahoe area knows that In-N-Out have the BEST burgers out of any fast food restaurant. No frozen, premolded dried out patties. Everything is fresh and the burgers ROCK!!! The Double Double is to die for.
In my opinion, the best burger that is not made by a fast food restaurant can be found at the cafe at Denio Junction, NV. It's a well-kept secret, well, because only 26 people live in the town (including my father), but if you get up there, you have GOT to get a cheeseburger. They're so good, you'll want to lay down and scream! :D

Their burgers are numbered 1-10 and each one is different from the next, I like the # 4 which is and pattie on a toasted roll with chili and onions and the best homemade fries I've had anywhere. They use charcoal in a brick pit indoors with a ventilating hood over the top that gives it that made on the backyard grill taste. I went to the one on Banks Street and on Orleans Ave. across from Delgado College.
I think the only burger that might come close to 'Bud's' is 'Ed Debevick's' in Chicago which is a 50's style diner that also has killer food and rude waitresses.
