I devoured these as a kid*. They were one of the regular junk food items my sister and I would buy at the store down the street to eat while watching The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family on Friday nights. I saw them at the store the other day and decided to pick up a box.
I love these things, but I'm not even sure we can call them "apple pie" (I've never had any ot the other Drake's Fruit Pies*). There's certainly apple inside, and there's a crust, but it seems like they took an apple pie, folded it, covered it in sugar, and then deep-fried it. That's pretty much what these things are, and I wouldn't change them at all. It's like having an apple pie Hot Pocket, covered in sugar, only cold.
I've never liked apple pie hot for some reason. I prefer it cold, right out of the fridge. And I think one of the reasons why is because I grew up on these. I wouldn't serve them at Thanksgiving, but they're a great unhealthy snack.
* Actually, I ate Hostess Pies more, if my memory is correct, but couldn't find them at the store yesterday. But I ate these too, and Drake's and Hostess Pies are pretty similar though, aren't they? They're owned by the same company, Interstate Bakeries Corporation.

OMG I'm still looking for pudding pies! Chocolate pudding wrapped around by glazed pie crust! The cherry/apple mix was my second choice.
According to http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5603, the pudding pies have been sited in NYC. I must visit my bodegas.

I lived in Maine for the worst four months of my life. I was broker than I've ever been before or after, but there was a little cafe across the street that had 5 cent coffee and Drakes for a quarter, and I could feel a little better for about a penny an hour.
I never ever eat them anymore, because they bring back bad memories, but I'm glad they were there then.

My mom used to buy the single-serving packs for me and she'd give one to me as an after-school snack in the car on those days that she picked me up from school. So it was a double treat because I didn't have to ride the bus, and I got to eat apple deliciousness!

Bob- Those Drakes and other, similar pies are a commercial version of the South's and colonial days famous Fried Pies. Yes, they really are fried. The style actually goes back hundreds of years here in the US and back to Europe before that. Basically they are the fast food of pie and can be made savory as well as sweet. Many other cuisines have similar fried pies.
In many parts of the US you can buy fried pies at supermarkets, pastry shops, etc. and they tend to be a bit better than Drakes. But Drakes aren't half bad. In no particular order I liked the apple, cherry, and pineapple when I was a kid.
Nowadays I grab them a few times a year as a comfort food snack, but I sure do miss the fresh made ones I used to get when I lived in Georgia and Florida a few years ago.
You are mostly right about how they are made as well. You take the dough and roll it out. Place the filling in the middle. Seal it and then fry them. They are dipped in a sweet glaze after they have cooled.
