Fancy tap water is the new trend

tap waterDo you drink bottled water? Are you someone who won't drink water unless it's bottled? Do you only drink a certain brand of bottled water because it's chic, or trendy, or in some way is an extension of who you are?

You might be a water snob.

But then again, you might be pooh-pooh'd by a new breed of water snobs - those who won't drink anything but tap water.

Slate recently published an interesting article about reverse water snobbery, in which people are shunning the energy-wasting, eco-unfriendly bottled water for plain old tap water. Restaurants like Chez Panisse in Berkeley have stopped serving fancy, expensive bottled water in favor of filtered municipal tap water.

I'll have to admit, though I hadn't really thought much about the ecological impact of drinking bottled water, I usually don't. I just think it' a ridiculous waste of money.

If those bottles aren't glass, you're negativing any of the supposed health benefits of treated water by drinking all of the toxins that leeched into the water from the plastic. The best solution really is tap water, but not straight from the municipal water supply. It's surprising inexpensive to add a built in water filtering solution to your kitchen for drinking and cooking water. Some people even treat the water as it comes into the house so that bath/shower and laundry water are clean. Believe it or not, showering with good water can make a world of difference for the skin. You'd be amazed how much water your skin absorbs during a typical shower.

Now we're supposed to just drink tap water and install a filtration system (what if you're a renter?).

I'm a huge fan of my Brita pitcher.

(Maybe I shouldn't post comments while listening to The Shins anymore ...)

There are fairly economical solutions for purchasing treated water and transporting it in plastic jugs made specifically to prevent the leeching of chemicals into the water. Our local health food store has such a service as well as a nearby store that does nothing but sell great water. But a Brita or Pur filter is undoubtedly better than drinking straight from the tap.

The thought was that I would trick myself into feeling like I was drinking something else since it was in a bottle. Nowadays, I've gotten a little wiser and we've thrown out all but two of the bottles and we just refill them with tap water and put them back in the fridge. Helps cut down on the bottles in the landfill, I still drink more water, AND I'm not giving my money to companies that are just using reverse osmosis machines to make money!

The product is installed where water enters the home and filters unwanted sediments, chlorine and contaminants without a drop in water pressure.  Designed for delivering filtered water throughout the home from a central source (just like central air-conditioning), this new Central Water Filtration System is the first in its category. It's available only at Lowe's.
