This may be an odd, naive question, but here goes.
For the past few years, I've been enjoying the Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino drinks that you can buy at the supermarket. They come in little bottles, in a four pack. I know that you can buy a Mocha Frappuccino at Starbucks locations, but when I order it it's a thicker, ice-based drink, and not the thin, iced-coffee drink that you get in the four pack from the supermarket. My question: can you actually order this drink at Starbucks, or can you only get the frozen one? Is this store Frappuccino a thin liquid because they can't market it as a frozen drink?
OK, sorry, I guess that was two questions, not one.

No you cannot order that in the actual Starbucks, but they sometimes carry them in the fridge there with any bottled beverages they distribute. Yes, they do sell those because you cannot sell the frozen drinks in supermarkets and convienent stores. I also found that they sell these at the Central Park Zoo in NYC at a stand right outside the gate. Kinda weird. I tend to be a purist and opt with the original.

From Wikipedia:

Bottled Version
A modified version of the Frappuccino is also available bottled without whipped cream or ice and is sold in retail stores, grocery stores, convenience stores, and Starbucks retail stores. The 9.5-ounce bottled version is manufactured by PepsiCo, the maker of Pepsi. This product is not the same recipe as the blended drink and therefore contains different proportions of ingredients and different nutritional values. The nutritional values can be acquired from Pepsi's Website.

According to Pepsi's website (as well as a special area on the Starbucks website), the following flavors are available:
* Mocha - made with chocolate
* Mocha Lite - made with chocolate and special creme to make it less fatty
* Vanilla - a hint of vanilla flavoring
* Coffee - similar to iced coffee
* Caramel - a twist of caramel in a delicious iced coffee
* Strawberries & Crème - crème based and coffee-free
* Mint Mocha (Limited Edition) - This was put on the market in July 2005 and dropped at the beginning of 2006.
Pepsi is hoping to strengthen the selection to include more crème beverages besides strawberry. Many hope for things like oranges and creme, peaches and creme, fruit and creme, and more.

In my opinion, the store-bought frappaccinos are akin to the iced lattes or mochas, only without ice.

You can order the ice mocha. Frapucino is always the blended one. Ice mocha is more like the bottled one.

As someone who works at Starbucks, Tran was correct the bottled versions are more like an iced latte with flavor. I like them both but they are different drinks. If you want a more milkshake like beverage go for the blended kind.

Lynds, why can't Bob just order the Frappacino, unblended? It comes in a liquid you've made in advance, right? Is it so concentrated that you can't simply pour it over ice in a cup, and serve it without running it through the blender?

No, they can't make you a "bottle style" Frappuccino, and frankly, the barista's probably going to get a little pissy if you ask them to.

Gobo ... what on earth would make a Barista pissy about just pouring some mix over ice, and taking one LESS step by not blending it? The liquid is made. Just pour it over ice. S'all I'm saying. Whatever. It's coffee flavored sugar in either case.

If you want the bottled style in a cup, just order an iced mocha. You can add caramel or vanilla syrup to get the other flavors. Coffee flavor is most like an iced latte with sugar.

You're right K, he mix for the ice blended drink is too concentrated to drink over ice....it's like a thick syrup. Best to go with the iced mocha and play with the number of espresso shots and syrup pumps until you get the flavor you like.
And Gobo...if the baristas you encounter get "pissy" with you over such a simple request, I'd guess it has something to do with your negative attitude. Baristas at my shop love a good drink interpretation challenge....even an easy one like this.

Wendy is right the barista should never get "pissy at you".
That said the frap mix is mixed with ice because it is so dense. I have tried it plain, its not that great. I Suggest an iced mocha or vanilla latte. But if you want to try it go for and let us know what you think.

First off, I would like to state that calling Starbucks clerks, "Baristas", is completely degrading to the title. Pushing a button, and bastardizing espresso drinks, makes you the exact opposite of a barista. I'm more than positive that half of these pimple faced button pushers, couldn't even begin to grasp the concept of espresso.(which I hope you all know, is a method of preparation, not a type of coffee bean) Second, why are you drinking the over roasted, poor quality to begin with, coffee at starbucks. You would be much better off ordering an iced mocha, vanilla, or carmel latte at a quality coffee shop that uses a local roaster or roasts themselves. (You'll thank me!)
P.S. Make sure they mix the flavor with the espresso first, then add milk, then ice!!! & If you could explain the chemistry behind, why pouring espresso over ice makes it bitter, I will like you forever!

First of all, the term "barista" has little to nothing to do with Starbucks itself--a barista is ANYONE who serves or works behind the counter of ANY coffee shop. Trust me you wouldn't want the frappacino base just poured over ice, it is a higher concentrate than the stuff you buy in the bottles, they are barley even the same mix. The mix in the bottle doesn't contain all of the emulsifying agents as the frap base used in the stores. The reason for the higher concentration is because it is intended to blend with the ice which will obviously melt into the mix. Although, I agree it is more unlikley anyone would get "pissy" about such request over being perplexed. You should also know that a Starbucks barista knows better than to pour the espresso over the ice because it "shocks it"--which causes the bitter taste and detracts from the rich flavors. The ice is always supposed to be added last, and if not--simply ask to have it remade, at least get what you pay for that's what any Barista is there for. Believe me working at a Starbucks you learn to live and breathe the coffee bean, obviously they know a little about serving and preparing coffee or a new store wouldn't be opening every five minuets.

I am a frappuccino junky. For anyone who wants one like you get at Starbucks, open the bottle just so it's not sealed and put it in the freezer for a little while. Take it out when it is kind of slushy. If you like whipped cream take a couple of sips and then squirt some whipped cream in the bottle. It is soooo good. I drink it with a straw.
