I've never gone out of my way to add chocolate to lunch and dinner recipes (except for dessert, of course!). I know there are moles and even chocolate pasta, but I've just always separated the chocolate from the main course.
That might change with Hershey's Spicy Cocoa Sloppy Joes. I haven't had a Sloppy Joe in many, many years and was going to make them soon anyway, and now this just gives me another reason to make them sooner rather than later.
Spicy Cocoa Sloppy Joes
1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup ketchup
2 tbsp Hershey's Cocoa
1 1/2 tbsp yellow mustard
2 1/2 tsp chili powder
1 1/2 tsp black pepper
1 1/4 tsp salt
Cook beef and onion in a large skillet on medium heat until beef is cooked and onions tender. Drain fat. Stir in the rest of the ingredients and heat 10 to 15 minutes until hot. Serve on buns.
Sounds like chili in a bun (I know many people add a little chocolate to their chili). I wonder if adding more cocoa to it makes it even better or destroys the recipe, heh...

Don't add more cocoa, Bob. It ruins the recipe by making it taste bitter instead of spicy. I like my cocoa SJs with jalapeno slices on the side and a vanilla shake the size of a football stadium. :)

I tried this last night and had the leftovers for breakfast this morning. It was pretty good. I really like spicy food but thought that this could use about 1/2 to 3/4 the spice it called for. Chili powder is one of those spices that I don't feel is too hot, but can feel there's too much chili powder taste. I think the chocolate gives it a very nice rich color but I think the recipe is a bit flat tasting. There needs to be a richer flavor to match the rich color. It has given me a few ideas to try though to bring the flavor up to par, though it certainly wasn't bad tasting.

yeah, adding extra cocoa is a baaaad idea. it just muddles everything up, and it does it FAST. i added maybe less than a teaspoon, because i thought the pot didn't have enough flavour, and it got a bit out of control. i'm trying to remedy it with more ketchup and salt and pepper, and a little chipotle.
the recipe is not bad, but i agree with tyguy. it's a bit flat. maybe i'll try to sweeten it a little, with something other than ketchup.

Sounds tasty, and I am pretty fond of Cincinnati chili. I'll have to give this one a try.

Made these last night. Pretty impressive. I took out some of the salt however as the sodium content in the ketchup is already pretty high. (Took it down to 3/4 tsp salt. I don't think it damaged the food at all.
This is a great recipe though. We made it and had some friends try it but didn't tell them what the "secret" ingredient was. Fun to try on friends and family!
