Wednesday Happy Hour: The Superhero

Because drinking shouldn't be confined to the weekends...

I had my first blueberry beer last year, from Sam Adams, and it was quite good. I thought the blueberry would be too sweet and overpowering, but it was actually a nice complement to the beer taste, and I'll have it again this summer. Having said that, I've never had blueberry mixed with vodka (I'm not a big vodka guy ever since an incident when I was a teen involving a pizza place and my pants, which I won't get into here), and blueberry syrup and vodka are the main ingredients in this drink, the Superhero.

The Superhero

2 parts Absolute Vodka
2 parts tequila
3 parts blueberry syrup
raspberry

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled sling glass.

The drink certainly looks cool, especially if you put it in that particular glass.

Try this: Rinse enough blueberries to fill a given glass jar, place in jar, pour in quite a bit of sugar, a couple dozen grains of kosher salt, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Fill jar with cheap vodka filtered four times through a Brita water filter, or expensive vodka--your call. Wait a week, taste for sweetness and add sugar as desired, possibly more lemon juice. Cordial is most drinkable between two and six weeks, after that it begins to taste "pruney," but your friends will still like it. Drink straight over ice or add soda water. I have yet to find a cocktail using this that is better than the taste of the cordial.

Strawberries are even better, but have a much shorter peak window--between two and four weeks.

The vodka contains water, which brings certain flavors out, and alcohol, which brings out other flavors. The effect is to make the cordials taste better and more fruity than the actual fruit itself.

You can also eat the fruit but it absorbs some of the taste of any congeners present. Most people don't mind.
