Bafferts Gin is 40% abv. / 80 proof and is hand crafted and distilled in London since 2000. It was definitely created to attract the vodka drinkers to the gin market. The recipe supposedly goes back to the 1800's, and includes triple distillation and the use of far less botanicals than other gins. Bafferts only uses four botanicals: juniper, coriander; orange peel, and lemon peel. It just recently won the Bronze medal in the 2006 San Francisco International Spirits Competition. The aroma is very light with a strong alcohol presence and just a hint of juniper, citrus and spice. The taste is very light and very smooth. You can even say exceedingly so. It is so light in fact that you can barely make out the botanicals that differentiate gin from vodka. Just very slight hints of juniper, citrus, and spice.
This is a premium spirit, I just am not sure that it can be fully classified as a gin. Personally I am bored by vodka, it just doesn't do it for me. I like flavors, even delicate ones. Bafferts rides the fine line of almost being too light and smooth, the least gin like gin I have tried to date. This is definitely one of those new gins aimed as a crossover for vodka drinkers, to introduce them into the fabulous world of gin. It is pretty good on the rocks. As soon as you add mixer it covers the flavor, since it is so delicate that even tonic water covers it up. It does make a nice crisp ultra-dry martini. Just go easy on the vermouth and use a ultra premium one like Vya Extra Dry Vermouth or the best one you can get. If you want a smooth and velvety premium gin, that is extremely delicate and light, then this is the spirit for you.
