I've done an extensive survey of all of the information about weight loss that you can find on the shelves of Border's and Barnes & Noble, and here are the results.
It seems as if the best way to lose weight and get in shape is a combo of the following: eating a lot of carbs, eating a lot of fat, cutting carbs out completely, drinking a lot of water, not eating any "white" foods at night like bread, rice, and pasta, eating just grapefruit, eating your meals in a mixed-up fashion (lunch for dinner, breakfast for lunch, etc), not eating after 8pm, eating a lot of soups, cutting out all candy, cakes, and processed foods, avoiding diet drinks, eating a Subway sub a couple of times a week, eating foods according to your blood type, eating foods according to color, eating a lot of fiber, training your brain to think like a thin person, eating like they do in France, eating like they do in China, not counting calories, making sure you count calories, taking vitamins and supplements, become a vegan, eating more meat, eat a lot of apples, eating only raw foods, and joining one of the weight loss organizations such as Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig.
If you follow the above rules, you should get in shape very quickly. You're welcome.

That was pretty damned funny.
I have to admit, I'm doing weightwatchers online and it is working. It boils down to decrease fat intake, increase your fiber intake by eating a lot more vegetables and whole grains. It still allows for blowouts and if you go off for a bit you can just go back on. I've gone from 296 to 276 since Jan 1 (I'm 6'4" just for reference).

I have to agree with Barry. I too am doing WW online. It's all about sensible portion control. Lotsa fiber, low fat...simple really. No crazy diet fads actually work in the long run. I have lost 11 pounds so far. Damn Easter week ruined me though!

I don't see anything in there about exercise. Take a brisk walk to the store instead of driving, take the stairs instead of the elevator etc. The simple things that makes a huge difference.

Even though I'm a vegan I have to disagree with Aaron. It's not enough to cut animal products out of your diet if you substitute them for crap or if you primarily eat crap anyway and are now eating boca burgers instead of the real thing.
What is the magical secret to weight loss? Calories in versus calories out. Thats it. Simple. Burn more then you take in and you will lose weight. Americans spend billions of dollars trying to find a way to make a five word sentence simpler.

I'm a Weight Watcher's leader and I love hearing that people are successful doing Weight Watcher's.
My thing was portions. I didn't eat that much high calorie/high fat stuff but my portions were out of control.
It boils down to this: A calorie is a calorie. Eat more calories than your body needs to function, you'll gain weight. Eat fewer calories, you'll lose weight.

Thanks for the informative post Bob. I don't have anything to say, but since you didn't let that stop you from posting, I didn't think it should stop me from commenting. :-P

It's all gotta work together, watch your portions, most premade foods are so outa touch with real portion sizes, get out and get moving-chase your dog at the park, walk around the block just get moving,
and slow down on the " junk food", dont cut it out-then you just want more of it,for me , i designated a day to eat all the junk I wanted, then for the rest of the week I stuck to only healthy stuff and it worked, by doing this I have lost 117 lbs and am still going

Olga,
I really diagree with you. I found that eating fast food even with a heavy workout load still left me unhealthy.
Aaron,
You will lose weight by becomming a vegan but you won't be healthier. Being a healthy vegan requires an immense amount of effort and money.
You can be a vegan for ethical reasons but it is unlikely to leave you healthier than a balanced diet.
I've yet to meet a vegan, whos profession wasn't being vegan, that had increased health to match their decreased weight.

Sean nailed it right on the head. You can eat nothing but chocolate cake if you choose and still lose weight if you're burning more calories than you've consumed.
The thing about raw foods, vegetables, whole grains, etc. is that you can eat a whole lot more of them than you can chocolate cake to get your day's calorie intake.
My weight loss was fueled by switching all my grains to whole grains so I'd feel more sated, cutting out nearly all fast food, and drinking zero calorie beverages. I cut portions a little, but not drastically. The only exercise I get is at work. Those simple little steps helped me lose that much in about 6 months, which really shows what poor food choices I was making before.

There is actually statistic evidence that vegetarians weight less than average. Whether that's *caused* by their diet is another question.
IMO, a lot of the meager weight loss people tend to experience at the start of these fad diets is probably due to the difficulty of adjusting your diet to whatever the new rules are. It's just harder to find things you can eat, so you eat less. In time people learn how to pig out on the new diet too, so they stop losing weight and gain back everything they did lose.

Just cause you weigh less doesn't mean your healthier. Going vegan only take you so far.
Eat in moderation, exercise (OMG novel concept) and it will come off and you look and feel better.

I lost some weight with a very simple strategy: Cook more, but eat less.
I usually eat healthier and better when I cook myself. Then I was more attentive to when to stop eating, so that I would not stuff myself, just because it tasted good. It's really that simple: Yes, the third cookie does look delicious, but why not stop at the first or second one? It takes a bit (though not a whole lot) of disclipine and naturally - when winter came along with Christmas and long dark days I gained most of what I lost back - but I believe that losing weight really is that simple.
I also love junk food, so I won't cut it completely, I just try to be more conscious about it and reduce it to an acceptable amount. Like someone said, depricing yourself of a guilty pleasure you love only makes you want it more.

wow. it kills me that the original post was meant as a joke, and the comments almost instantly became so obsessively, and humourlessly, focused on weight loss. it was a joke, for god's sake.
i'm up for enjoying life - the delicious things, the dangerous things, the mysterious things. it constantly shocks me how many people seem to define 'healthy' by the number of things they exclude from their lives.

I do agree with Eric in living life to its fullest. I think it's wonderful to indulge in things we love once in a while, and when certain things- most of which are certain foods- make you happy, you shouldn't abandon it completely. Repeated before, moderation is key.
I apply this to my exercise agenda too by doing things I enjoy like biking, dancing, and surfing instead of slaving away on the treadmill for hours.(Unless thats what you enjoy)
It's a sweet life

you guys are a bunch of boring idiots. this post was a joke. it obviously was not a call for advice on how to lose weight. i just wish people would shut the f*** up about what worked for them and LAUGH at bob's post. no one wants to hear about how you lost weight and how it's better than all the other techniques. that's exactly what he's making fun of in this post.
