First there was Disney's "Champagne" for kids, and now the authorities (whoever those authorities may be) are all over Spyke. However, unlike the kiddie Champagne that was "just for pretend," Anheuser-Busch's new Spyke has real alcohol - it's a malt beverage with a 12% alcohol content.
The reason there's a stink about it? People are worried that Spyke is aimed at teens, particularly during Prom and graduation season. Not only does the drink come in flavors -- mango, lime, melon and chocolate -- but it's also infused with caffeine and energy herbs ginseng and guarana, and it comes in a tiny bottle that's easily hidden from a parent's or chaperone's watchful eye.
The authorities are worried about Ab's reckless marketing to teens, but I worry that this is just a nasty drink. I mean really, "spyking" your cocktail with a chocolate-flavored malt liquor? Gross.

I'm not sure I'd ever want to drink anything that's bottled into shampoo-bottle lookalikes!!

I'm 27, however I'm a kid at heart. I saw this at the checkout of a local liquor store and ran straight for it - but it contains either sucralose or aspartame (can't remember offhand), so I put it down with disappointment that they had to resort to chemicals to sweeten it. =(

Pille, you're right, they do make me think of shampoo bottles too.
If my kids were older, I'd be concerned about the appeal too. Mine are 4 and 2, so I don't think they'll be hiding these from me anytime soon. Makes me wonder what they will be getting into as teens, though.

They're really no different than your standard wine cooler. Fruity, insanely sweet, doesn't taste much like alcohol? It's like a gateway drug. Surely, the target audience has always been young adults (and those misguided women who convince themselves that beer is for men).

FFS people, calm the F down, its just as easy to hide a mini bottle of absolut as one of these, so really - enough of the "protect the kids" arguments. I don't want to see my right to crappy alcoholic beverages packages in shampoo bottles be taken away.

I'm so tired of people saying things are marketed at kids because the items are fruity or chocolated flavored. Adults like flavored things too. If parents haven't reared their children properly to respect the LAW, the kids drinking is not any one's fault but theirs!!!!

Please, when I was a teen, we drank whatever we could get our hands on. We didn't care what it looked like or what it tasted like for that matter. Parents need to get over it. Kids are going to do what they want, we did. Kids are going to drink, they're going to have sex and they're going to try drugs. Just do as my parents did and hope that you taught them to make the right decisions. (besides, it's not like any of the parents that are upset over this were perfect when they were younger.)

first off i would like to agree with, Maggie, Sig, plaid ninja, and I'm sure many others!!! Kids are going to do what they want to do now a days anyway, when i was a kid i was locked down from doing anything, but as soon as i seen an opportunity to do it i did it...you can't do that know they will find ways of getting into things that they want. Alcoholic beverages are not even in the same category as non- alcoholic beverages so "the target towards kids" things is just to try and get it off the market...if their not old enough to buy it then they can't buy it( the parents are the ones who are buying these things for their kids....hence the news) calm down and relax..adults want to try new things out as well so if it's really going to bother you that much then start a boycott or something to get it off the market!!

One teenaged 15 year old girl, i coufht with 8 in her purse and she had joints and condums too. That is the tyoes of people who will drink this stuff. I agree that it is a Parent's responsibility to bring up their children right, but this is marketed STRAIGHT AT TEENAGERS!
Also, you say that AB has "great ideas". Maybe your parents did not bring you up right if that is how you think as an adult.
"By 1988, all 50 states and the District of Columbia had prohibited the sale of alcohol to anyone under the age of 21.2 Yet alcohol is still the most commonly used drug by children and adolescents in the United States.3 The rates of underage drinking today remain too high, and the consequences too severe."
Also, please read this sad report, about RETAILERS selling these drinks to UNDERAGE CHILDREN.

ALCOHOL IS A GATEWAY DRUG if there ever was one!

Ok people- THINK!!!!!! When I was 16- I drank. My parents ARE awesome and my family life IS too. (still is at 25)
But we were average high school kids- and we were determined. We found ways to buy quarts of st. ides- a flavored malt beverage, which comes in such flavors as strawberry kiwi.
If they hadn't carried the flavored beer, guess what we'd have been drinkin- ANYTHING ELSE> I do recall alot of Old English being consumed back then too.
THIS ARGUMENT ABOUT THE KIDS IS ABSOLUTELY ABSURD! I, FOR ONE, HAPPEN TO ENJOY THE CHOCOLATE FLAVORED GUINESS AND NOW THAT SPYKES HAS BEEN PULLED I CAN'T---OH WAIT A SECOND...THERE ARE PLENTY OF FREAKIN FLAVORED ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OUT THERE.
GUESS WHAT- THERE ARE LITTLE MINI LIQUOR BOTTLES SOLD AT ANY ABC STORE TOO. JUST AS EASY TO CONCEAL....
YET ACCEPTED- JUST AS SPYKES SHOULD BE.
YOU KNOW HOW EASY IT IS TO POUR COCONUT FLAVORED RUM INTO A WATER BOTTLE????????? IT'S THE KIND OF THING SOMEONE WOULD DO WHO IS DETERMINED TO DRINK.
PULLING SPYKES OFF THE SHELVES DOESNT DO ONE BIT OF GOOD- IT'S GOOD PARENTING THAT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, TO A CERTAIN EXTENT.
