Citizens for Health, a national consumer group, is concerned that the artificial sweetener Splenda is causing side effects and making consumers ill. Though it isn't stated which specific side effects people are experiencing, the group is lobbying for additional research to be conducted on sucralose, the sweetening component of Splenda. Merisant, the makers of Equal and NutraSweet, believe that the company which makes Splenda, McNeil Nutritionals, is misleading the public with their tagline "made from sugar so it tastes like sugar."
The Chairman of Citizens for Health, Jim Turner, has stated, "I encourage consumers to contact us if they have suffered any side effects from the use of the chlorinated artificial sweetener Splenda and to join us in demanding that FDA immediately conduct case studies on possible side effects from its use."
Though not a scientifically accurate survey, a simple poll conducted on the source article webpage reveals that 60% of respondents claim that they do use Splenda, and have never noticed any problems. 30% say they don't use the product at all, while another 10% claim they do use Splenda, and have noticed side effects. What about you? Do you use Splenda in place of regular sugar, and if so, have you ever experienced any form of side effect from it?

after the cup of coffee i suffered heachaces , dizziness, my thinking pattern was slightly altered.

I was using it daily in my iced coffee, and drank diet beverages containing Splenda as well. I was plaqued with awful bloating, irregularity, and hair-curling flatulence. This went on for about a month until I pinpointed the cause. Since I discontinued the use of Splenda in my diet, I no longer have these symptoms. The same was true for my husband. This is not to say the Splenda is bad for everyone, it's just not something our family can use.

However...I have noticed a lack in appetite lately (which is odd in my case) and was wondering if anyone else had this as a side effect to Splenda. Could be just a non-related thing, but I'm curious.

Getting off splenda the sores slow down. I love the splenda but I know I have to get off before I really get sick. Have anyone having trouble with the sores?

The rash occurred only where the syrup touched his skin (he wiped his mouth using his hand and the rash streaked across his face wherever he had wiped the syrup). It took several hours for the rash to go away. This happened twice before we realized it was the syrup. He has never had a reaction to syrup without Splenda before or after this happened so it wasn't due to the syrup. The lesson here is don't give kids artificial sweetners!

Please remember that the word "natural" doesn't mean that something is good for human consumption. Poisonous mushrooms are natural; snakes bites are natural, many substances that are taken from plants such as medicines (digitalis) and even HEROIN may be natural but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to use them. Thanks everyone for your experiences and remember to listen to your doctor AND your BODY. Doctors don't know everything -they're human too.

I started using it after I was diagnosed with diabetes. I have never had any side effects. I also would like to point out to all those people who are saying it’s not natural so you shouldn’t use it, that salt is 100% natural and it will kill you if you get to much of it. Arsenic is also all natural and I don’t think I’d want to take that at all.
