ConAgra has now been dealing with their peanut butter problems, which extend back several years, for a few weeks, doing damage control and dealing with consumer complaints/concerns. Even after all that they've been through, the company has vowed that they will clean up the Georgia factory that produced the salmonella-contaminated spreads and will bring Peter Pan back, safely, to consumers.
But this begs the question of whether or not it is worth the effort on ConAgra's part to do so. The recall of tainted peanut butter stretches back to 2004 - is that long enough to have permanently shaken consumer confidence in the brand?
Peter Pan is the number three selling peanut butter brand in the US, after Skippy and Jif. Over the past four weeks, more than 400 people in 44 states reportedly became sick as a result of eating their peanut butter, although ConAgra itself has recorded over 1.4 million calls about the recall and from consumers who think that they might have become ill after eating it. The recall is estimated to cost $50-$60 million in the first four months of this year alone. Peter Pan brand peanut butter typically does about $150 million in annual sales.

We had to throw out our jar of Peter Pan, since the serial number started with 2111. My husband and I both prefer the Peter Pan brand over the other peanut butters. But the next time we went to the store, we picked out a jar of Jif instead. It was just a gut reaction. We're expecting a little one and we've been careful not to risk any sort of food poisoning during pregnancy (which means no sushi for me!). After all the publicity and learning the extent of contaminated product, it will be hard to disassociate the Peter Pan brand name with unsafe food.

If our local stores ever put Peter Pan back on the shelves, I will buy it again. I always buy the reduced fat peter Pan. I'm on a low fat diet because of my heart. THat's the only peanut butter I feel safe eating. Of course, my last jar was a 2111 so I had to toss it. I haven't had a taste of peanut butter since then.

Ech--I never bought it anyway, because I don't understand the appeal of sugared peanut butter. But after this debacle, I would trust it even less. It seems part of a bigger picture revealing the foullness of agribusiness generally. But maybe that's just me...

I never really liked Peter Pan...I'm more of a Jif guy on the odd occasion when I want some peanut butter. So for me it's a moot issue.
If I pretend that it was Jif that had the problems, I probably wouldn't buy any more. It'd be one thing if they had an issue and dealt with it, but as far back as the problem's gone, I don't think I could go back.

++ homemade peanut butter (with peanuts you roast yourself) is so much better than Peter Pan it's ridiculous.

Ooops...i had already eaten 3/4 of the jar over a month or two when i noticed the 2111.... code on the top.I threw the rest away, but had no bad effects from it.I would buy Peter Pan again, if it's on sale, as that's my main deciding factor when buying PB.

My gf has turned me into a "PB snob" (our name for it) and I can now only eat the "natural" style. Peanuts and salt like Electro and Wynk. The other stuff tastes like gross candy to me now.
Although, I dont make my own. I buy the Laura Scudder's brand. Going to the root of the initial question, "Would you still buy [PB brand here]?" and assuming said brand was Laura Scudder's; I dont know. I guess I would but like Scott Gentzen has said above, the duration that this recall is covering is disturbing. I'd hesitate but if my only alternatives were the sugared PB's, then I'd take my chances with the salmonella.
How's that for PB snobbishness! Haha.

Yes. I'd buy Peter Pan again. All this attention has brought so much scrutiny to that plant that once it is open again, it will be the cleanest processing plant around.
There will be more contamination but it won't be from Peter Pan next...it will be something else.

The word "still" implies that at one time I would buy Peter Pan. Since that was never the case, I can't really answer the question. There are much better "nuts" (peanuts are actually legumes) to use for nut butters.

Peter Pan is the only brand I've ever liked and I LOVE peanut butter. I make peanut butter cookies with Jif, mostly because I trust Cook's Illustrated when they say "even if you don't like Jif, you'll like it in cookies". However, I would no more eat a Jif PB&J than I would a motor oil and jelly sandwich.
I hadn't eaten a PB&J in a while and of course, my lid had 2111, so I had to throw it away and now I'm craving a sandwich.

Not eating Peter Pan, or any other PB, after this because of contamination issues, makes about as much sense as the anti-spinach wave that hit the country after the fall '06 incident . . . people wouldn't even buy local spinach from Jersey farmer's markets.
Be that as it may--eating anything run through a huuuuuge plant is paramount to gastrointestinal/bacterial roulette, as far as I'm concerned. That's not to say I don't play it, though.

Old & Tired: Peter Pan Peanut Butter
New & Fresh: Tinkerbell Peanut Butter!
Just sayin' it would rock the house, give them some much needed positive exposure. Then they could go back to the old & tired Peter Pan.

I just got the ConAgra check for a measly $2.65 for being a responsible citizen and throwing out the jar of Peter Pan from the recalled lot. It cost me a buck or so to mail the lid. It cost me more than $4 for the jar of peanut butter at Stop & Shop in New Rochelle, NY.
Fewer consumers are going to abide by the rules of product recalls if they get reimbursed for less than the cost of the product. I hadn't even opened my jar yet.
Bottom line: Peter Pan loses my business and I'm happy to share the story online and to anyone who cares to listen.

We buy the Peter Pan Plus, which has added vitamins and minerals. Since the recall we've had to buy Skippy, which tastes closest to Peter Pan but just isn't the same. We tried Jif but (this is going to sound stupid) it had a very strong peanut flavor, and I don't particularly like peanuts. We went the natural route for a while, but (1) it's a pain to have to stir it all the time, (2) you have to keep it refrigerated, which makes it hard to spread, (3) I don't like peanuts and even the "creamy" has chunks of peanuts. I will be thankful when I can go back to my beloved Peter Pan.
