Peeps are soft, fluffy little mounds of sugary goodness that are absolutely the best around Easter, although Just Born is continuously expanding their line in an effort to include all major holidays. Usually, this expansion manifests itself in the form of new colors, like the bright green Peeps that are popping into stores for St. Patrick's Day, but sometimes they try to do something a little different, as they did when they release the cocoa-flavored bunny peeps a few weeks ago. Their latest release, however, omits what has traditionally been the most important part of the Peep: the sugar. Sugar-Free Peeps are the newest Just Born product. They are made with Splenda and come in packages of three yellow chicks.
Despite the plethora of Peeps in the candy aisles these days, I have yet to encounter the sugar-free version in person. Call me a traditionalist, but I have a hard time believing that the Splenda version could be anywhere near as good as the regular ones - especially when you consider that sugar, corn syrup and gelatin make up 98% of a regular Peep!

I bought them at Fresh Market a few days ago -- I actually think they have more flavor than the regular Peeps. They are fabulous! Just wish they were easier to find.

It isn't blasphemy to a type 2 diabetic. I loved the original Peeps when I was a child. Now, I can't eat all that sugar. If I can even come close to tasting the nostalgia even for one bite I'll be happier for the experience. I'm going looking this afternoon!

I use Splenda all the time, but I just can't see the Splenda having the same crunchy texture as the colored sugar that coats every Peep. That's my favorite part.

Yum-o Sugar free peeps are good. I found some at my local walgreens as well. Not bad at all. After many Easters without peeps this is going to be just like being a kid again. Oh and even better....chocolate dipped sugar free peeps - http://www.abountifulharvest.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=ABH&Product_Code=SFBCDP&Category_Code=EAS

BLASPHEMY? Obviously not a true peep lover, for then you would only eat a yellow peep at Easter and miss out on all the others. And finally a wonderful peep for all those diabetics, children and older peep lovers (myself included)..a dream come true!

I'm a Peeps addict & am diabetic. I've tried the sugar free peeps and they are HORRID! They taste bitter. You get 1/2 the wt. for twice the price. They have sorbitol & maltitol, sugar substitutes that will give you gas so bad you'll be blaming your dog! Seriously. There's even a warning on the side that tells of the laxative effect too many (all 3 in the pack?) may have.
