Just a few weeks ago, the FDA issued a warning that said some batches of "Peter Pan" and "Great Value" brand peanut butters, manufactured by ConAgra at a Georgia plant, were contaminated with salmonella. ConAgra instituted a recall of all jars that have a product number beginning with "2111" that were purchased after August 2006. That recall has just been extended and now stretches back to October of 2004 and includes all peanut butters and peanut butter toppings sold under one of those two brand names.
It's a bit shocking, and certainly not reassuring in the least, that the problem began in 2004 and has remained undetected for so long.
Throw away any "Peter Pan" or "Great Value" peanut butter you have and buy something fresh. Preferably of a different brand. You can mail the lids of the disposed of jars to ConAgra for a refund.

This would be a great time for people to switch to a natural PB. Trader Joe's has a great natural PB and for PB with wonderful flavors try the resource that I found on food411 - PB Loco

Live it up, try using almond butter, cashew butter, tahini, or just go for broke and eat "Crack in a Jar", also known as Nutella. (sometimes it doesn't even need bread :-P)

Natural peanut butter is so mainstream that you should be able to buy it at your local supermarket without braving the health food aisle -- there's a Laura Scudders version, though I'd agree it's not as good as TJ's.
Cashew butter paired with chili-lime jelly is the way to go.

most commonly available peanut butters are, if not all are contaminated with oils from plants that are not compatible with our digestive systems. All peanut butters with hydrogenated palm and cotton oils make me vomit.
btw- hte Advertise with Slashfood linmk is dead. How does one advertise here?

one of the most confusing parts to in this whole peter pan mess was "the number on the lid" message...I had a jar of peter pan with no number on the lid, but a number on the side of the jar started with the dreaded "2111" or whatever...it was impossible to find any info about numbers anywhere other than "on the lid" and all instructions specified what to do "with the lid"...bottom line turns out to be if the number is on the jar, it is a problem as well, but this all was handled very poorly
