In an effort to meet growing consumer demands for smaller portions at casual dining restaurants, T.G.I. Friday's has announced the inception of their new 'Right Portion, Right Price' menu. The items will be sold at a reduced price all day, every day, rather than just at select times or for select people, like how Seniors menus currently are. On the new menu they have introduced six new entrees which will fall between $6.99 and $8.99, including such dishes as Asian-Glazed Chicken with Field Greens, Half-Rack Baby Back Ribs, and Bistro Sirloin Salad. Two of their menu items - Dragonfire Chicken and Shrimp Key West, also fall into their 'Better For You' category, which contains items that total 500 calories or less and have less than 10 grams of fat per serving.
After hearing about the extreme eating debate recently, I'm hoping more restaurants adopt this plan, especially for those of us who find it hard to finish a large plate of food and don't want to simply order a salad every time we go out.

Of course, the next step after this would be to make the portions served a lot healthier. More whole grains and nutritionally dense ingredients, less fat. My personal wish is that restaurants consider the sodium content of their meals. Ever since I gave birth to my daughter, I can't even look at salt without bloating. I've had to give up so many of my favorite foods. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem. I'm sure that people with high blood pressure have the same problem. What does everyone think?

Just returned from lunch at Fridays and found this site while looking for the calorie count of the small portion Bruschetta Chicken Parmesan ($6.99) -- panko-crusted chicken breast topped with bruschetta topping on small bed of angel hair pasta. Portion was perfect. And good. My dining companion who ordered the pecan crusted chicken salad for $8.99 left half of her salad. I like these options, and hope more chain restaurants follow the lead of Fridays.

3-18-2007 @8:15PM Brownie Obsession TGI Fridays said... I would like the public to know about a potential dessert disaster. TGI Fridays has a dessert called the Brownie Obsession. The customer service refuses to disclose the amount of calories in this dessert. I recently learned that the Brownie has 1190 calories that doesn't include the 1 1/2 cups of Haggen Das Ice cream approx. 450 calories, nor does it include the chocolate and carmel covering the top along with the nuts. In total this dessert is above 2000 Calories and should be disclosed to customers not kept a secret.

I think most of you are missing the point- it's not about paying for food you'll never eat or taking the extra food home with you it's about the fact that portions are so out of control, we don't even know what a proper portion size is anymore. If restaurants start giving proper portions then we can start eating proper portions when we're at home making our own dinners.
