New Angus Third-Pounders at McDonald's

Southern California McDonald's restaurants launched three new burgers this week. All are part of the new Angus Third-Pounder lineup. The burgers are made with USDA-inspected Angus beef and are intended to be more "gourmet" than the average McD's offering (they come on "bakery-style" rolls, for instance) in order to appeal to those who would normally opt for a different burger chain over the golden arches.

The three varieties are the Deluxe, Angus Mushroom and Swiss, and Angus Bacon and Cheese:

  • Angus Deluxe: American cheese, sliced red onions and sliced red tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, mustard and mayonnaise.
  • Angus Mushroom and Swiss: sauteed mushrooms, Swiss cheese and mayonnaise.
  • Angus Bacon and Cheese: bacon, merican cheese, sliced red onions, mustard, ketchup and pickles.

The estimated retail price is $3.99 each. They will be available in Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura counties.

I can spend 4 bucks and get the "gourmet" junk at McDonalds or I can just drive the extra parking lot and go to In-N-Out where my burgers have always been good since always. I think I know where I'm going. And make it animal style. Yes, the fries animal style too.

I also remember that it failed horribly.

Being a member of management in the fast food business, I've yet to hear anything negative said about the Angus burgers. In fact, about 90% of the people who sampled this product claimed to be addicted! They are delicious!!

The Arch Deluxe bombed because it was too small and basic (it's now called the Big N' Tasty, if they still carry it).

My fellow In-n-Outers: have you noticed that as the price of the Double-Double increases, the size of it has decreased? Just holding it, you can tell it's smaller. Sucks.

I guess thats from all the over-processing of the meat. The bun was really good, probobaly the best fast food bun I ever had. But the Angus Deluxe has WAY too much mayo, I had to scrape half of it off.

Still haven't tried one because the commercials are so irritating - don't know why they think having a group of cranky easterners cajoling us as though we were all surfer dudes (even as though that were an insult) would act as incentive. The ad exec was probably the same guy who advised M&M's to not do a product placement in ET, or Poppin Fresh in Ghostbusters.
I gave up on McDonalds greyburgers long ago (lets face it: even if it's angus beef, it's still going to go through the mcDonalds process), and usually grab an In N Out or Fatburger, or even a Carl's burger.

They have always been very small and as everybody else went super size they just kept doing what has made them famous all these years and didnt change a thing. So in comparison they are smaller than other chaines, but as an ex employee (almost 20 years ago). They have not changed in size one bit.

Tastes like meatloaf on a cheap bun.

I'd rather have a double Q pounder any day.

(of course I'd rather eat somewhere other than McDonalds, Jack in the Box actually tastes like real food)

I sampled the one with bacon and cheese at a restaurant in the city's Jefferson Park neighborhood. I liked it a lot, but really wonder whether McDonald's now has way too many items on the menu.

I did a little podcast about the experience here http://chicagoscope.com

Fast food was not meant to be "good" it was meant to be fast! Now, I got lucky, as the test made its way to Chicago, and just left to New York. I drove to get one, and it really was good. I would never eat at Booger Fling, that place always gives me the runs, and I don't like microwaving fried foods.

If you haven't tried it, you can't really complain. We did have Angus 1/3 Pounder boxes in Chicago, and yes, the burger is still in its test phase. If the one someone had was a bit overcooked, that might change. I was told the Angus burger requires a new grill to cook, so thats why the test is going slowly. Many McDonald's will need to remodel if the Angus burger goes nationally.

I had the mushroom swiss, and really did not expect it to be any better than a Quarter Pounder w/cheese. The bun was great, the mushrooms tasted good, the swiss cheese was REAL with holes, not processed, and the burger was much different than the standard Micky D's burger. It was a bit salty, but no complaints... well one... I wasn't able to go back the next day to get another, they already ended the test phase here.

Best of luck to everyone in New York getting their hands on one!
