I have no idea what Marmite tastes like, but from what I hear, you either love it or you hate it. Whatever the opinion may be, what Marmite is is a supposedly nutritious British foodstuff that is made from the yeast residue from the beer-making process. It is often used as a spread on toast.Well, just in time to prepare for St. Patrick's Day...a little Irish love for Marmite from Guinness Beer (another love it or hate it thing -- personally, i can't stand Guinness)! Marmite will use the yeast residue from making Guinness to make a limited run of about 300,000 jars of Marmite. Apparently, the stuff was available in the UK as of February 19, 2007.

Of course, I don't know what that tastes like either.

Absolutely awesome stuff!
Your not Australian if you haven't at least tried Vegemite. ;)

A jar of the Guiness Marmite to dip some twiglets in and a pint of Guiness, oh man would that be great!

It's slightly less salty and a lot less viscous. The apparently magical ingredient is "Guinness yeast extract" but I wouldn't bother, it's nothing special.
Here in the UK, regular jars of Marmite retail at around £1.50 and the new Guinness variety is only avaialble at the moment, in a larger jar for £2.49.

The curious critter I am, I have a small jar of both Vegemite and Marmite for my need to know just_how_gross it is. For the most part, it tastes a bit like beef bullion. Its really strong stuff, too. Like I've seen all over, it needs to be spread *very thinly* on buttered toast or it will make your face all messed up once you get a mouthful. I can see why people hate it especially if you spread it on like I do with PB&J.
In my own personal taste-test, I discovered that I prefer Vegemite over Marmite. Cant explain quite why but I dont love or hate either one. Its really not all that bad but I cant see myself finishing the jar. I'll eat it a few more times in the near future.
...who knows, I'll probably be perversly addicted to the stuff by then.

Haha. Only kidding.

When it comes to things which are better for being spread sparingly on toast I go for the grown-up version of Marmite; Patum Peperium aka Gentlemen's Relish aka anchovy relish.
*well done that sneaky marketeer!

It is indeed healthy. It's rich in B vitamins, which makes it popular with vegetarians wanting something savory with breakfast.
I love Guinness as well, so I'd love to find Guinness Marmite if anyone knows where it can be bought in the states...

The famous brewer of this porter isn't Guinness though.
