How far would you travel to have your favorite meal? Or rather, how far would you have it sent? Rap star Kanye West, along with 7 other diners, will be enjoying a feast of Indian food this Wednesday from the restaurant British Raj's, located in Wales, though he will be dining in New York City. The bill for this meal is to exceed $3900. Even with shipping costs, why is it so much? The actual cost of the food, eaten in the restaurant, would run at about $17.50 per person. However the restaurant's Executive Chef will be accompanying the meal to New York, ensuring quality control, customs clearance, and proper service. The $3900 price tag actually reflects the loss the restaurant will experience during the two evenings the chef will be away. His travel and accommodation costs are extra.
Apparently the dinner will include "onion bhajees, chapati breads, biryanis, pappadums, a specially prepared fish dish and vegetables on the side." Kanye isn't the first to receive this kind of service though. The music promotion company that arranged this dining experience previously ordered food to an after-show party for Snoop Dogg from the same Wales restaurant.

$3900 may seem like a big financial hit, but the collateral publicity for British Raj is...almost priceless! ;)
True story: several years ago my better half drove to Chicago (from Northern New York, about 1000 miles each wat), purchased a complete meal from Raj Darbar (our favorite Indian restaurant), packed it in a cooler with dry ice, and drove back so we could enjoy it together. That's love...and that's good Indian food!

Just read that while there is a $3900 meal going to New Yok it is not, in fact, for Kanye West. He will be out of town next week according to his management.

Just as well. He would have thrown a temper tantrum and demanded to know why the salt and pepper wasn't included, and why others diners were given salt and pepper and he wasn't, thus robbing him of what he feels was rightfully his.

Lenka- That IS love! Ha! And you are completely correct- $3900 isn't that much money in the grand scheme of things, but that PR is how they'll be laughing all the way to the bank.
mm..indian food...

Interesting story, but the British Raj link is currently going to a restaurant in England, not Wales. The British Raj in Wales is on Tregwilym Street in Rogerstone, Newport, not near Windsor Castle. I tried to find the correct URL, but it appears to be malfunctioning (perhaps overwhelmed with too many visits).

Come on, man, let's make a deal. I'll cater that meal for $900, including serving it on fine china, Riedel crystal, with paired wines/beers, served by uniformed waitstaff and anything else such as my boarding & airfare from L.A.
Then you can use the remaining *THREE* *THOUSAND* *DOLLARS* to feed a whole bunch of homeless, or to provide food to a battered women's shelter, or to give a year's worth of birthday cakes to an orphanage, or as seed money for someone to start a food-based business... or ANYTHING that is more noble than this egotistical and unnecessary extravagance.

I hate to mention this, but these people don't sign up to be the cure for the problems inflicted by a poorly run government. I hate to see how people love out FREE society but keep wanting to take what is someone's elses money and redistribute it, Chef JoAnna, South America might be right up your alley or any other extremely socialist country who practices like this.
