It looks like the 100-calorie packaging trend that started last year is still going strong. Since they already put every kind of cookie, cracker, chip and other salty snack that they could think of into the portion controlled packaging, the manufacturers are branching out. Hostess, for instance, is launching a line of 100-calorie snack cakes.
The Hostess snacks are three miniature cakes in one package and come in three flavor, including carrot cake with cream cheese icing, yellow cake with chocolate icing and chocolate cake with chocolate icing. All three flavors are cream-filled. Predictably, they are being marketed towards women with the tag line "3 cakes. 100 calories. Real satisfaction."
The interesting thing about the launch of the cakes is that Hostess products are not particularly high in calories to begin with, although snackers certainly don't get three cakes for 100 calories. A regular Hostess chocolate cup cake has only 180 calories, while Twinkies, the brand's most famous offering, have only 150 calories per cake.

Don't be fooled by the picture on the box. The actual "cupcakes" are flat in comparison. They taste ok but each "cupcake" is one bite-size morsel. I felt the picture was very misleading and my husband and I laughed when we opened the box and saw the actual product.

I just bought these a few days ago. The icing is a little...tough? You know, the way low-cal icing can have a hardness to it. But for 3 bite-size (maybe even two-bit-size if you want) cakes, it's not a bad deal. I don't remember the sat fat amount, though.

There's "beef fat" in them according to the label. YUCK!

My brother and I have been getting these since we saw them a week or so ago. They're selling like hot cakes.
For an easy "this is 100 calorie" dessert (we're both on diets) these are pretty darn good compared to some of the others in that category.

I wanted to say Thank You for such a wonderful product. I am on Weight watchers and they are only 1 point per serving and they are in my opinion wonderful. To me they are the perfect size to help satisfy the sweet tooth without going overboard. I will be letting my fellow weight watchers know about them.

Unfortunately, the deceptive "healthy" "100 calorie" packaging hides the fact that Hostess still uses ANIMAL FATS in most of their products (YUCK!). Almost all other major food manufacturers of baked goods no longer use animal fats. For us vegetarians, that presents a problem. Hostess should realize that there is no need to use animal fats; many other baked goods (and Hostess' own mini muffin bites) dont rely on dead animals for "taste".

I bought these for my kids and they just love them! They are the perfect size for kids and they are a nice 'low cal' treat for when they need that afternoon pick-me-up. I tried a package myself. It was enough to satisfy my craving for chocolate (I am a cake junky!) and I didn't have the guilt I do when I slice myself an "extra" large piece of cake!

THESE ARE SOME OF THE SMALLEST SNACK CAKES I HAVE EVER SEEN. I GUESS THE IDEA WAS TO THINK YOU ARE EATING THREE CAKES..THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE 1 100 CALORIE CAKE.
BY THE WAY, THESE HAVE 2 POINTS ON WEIGHT WATCHERS, NOT 1 PER SERVING.

Reminds me of the story or the famous soup maker who produced a "reduced" fat can of soup when the lo-fat craze first started. No one noticed for awhile that the "new" can was six ounces instead of the usual 8 ounces. It certainly did contain less fat.

Don't fall for the hype and the packing. Do the math. I get tickled when I see people getting all excite when a company repackages their old products in smaller portions and have you pay more for less. You will actually get few calories, spend less money and get the same amount of product if you buy the regular product and cut it in half. One Twinkie cake whole is 150 calories. Cut in half each section is 75 calories. Want it to seem like more? Squash it; let it spread out a bit. You get you two bites, you satisfy your craving and you save money. Same thing with the cookies and crackers. If a serving size is 120 – 200 calories for 12 – 15 pieces. Eat 6 – 7 pieces. Want it seem like more? Break the pieces in half. Voilá!

100 Calories is great - and the cakes TASTE great, but what about the FAT content. That seems high. I liked it when Hostess made the "low fat" cup cakes and twinkies. THEY WERE EXCELLENT, AND LOW IN FAT AND CALORIES. Why did they quit making them?????

Those 100 calorie packs are cool for those watching their calories and points. However, for those watching their sugars and carbs why not have "15 carb" packs or "30 carb packs". You might say but they can always have sugar-free stuff. Well, I am allergic to Nutrasweet(aspartame) so I can't and am thus forced to count carbs. It would be a big help to those like me.

FYI...the chocolate cakes are one point but the better tasting yellow cakes have 2 points...still a bargain when you're watching everything you put in your mouth!

It is nice to know that a regular twinkie has only 150 calories. Have you ever tried them frozen? They're yummy on a hot day! It is just like cake and ice cream in one! BUT, if you want MORE calories, try them deep fried! The recipe is all over the internet.

You guys are pretty hilarious, I sometimes watch my carbs and sugar intake, like today I made myself a healthy carrot, grapefruit and pineapple juice in the Jack Lalane fruit juicer. And then much later I bought a vanilla and cookies and cream, with whipped topping and a cherry on top, all of this was from Steak and Shake. So whether your counting your carbs or not try to make the best healthy choices that you can make, and still have your cake and eat it to!!
