Gin Notes: Juniper Green Organic London Dry Gin

Juniper Green Organic London Dry Gin is 43% abv. / 86 proof. I like the slightly higher proof gins and Juniper Green Organic is no exception. I find that they have more flavor to them and are a bit dryer than 80 proof gins. Juniper Green is a 100% organic gin, all the ingredients are USDA certified organic, British Soil Association Certificate, and CCOF certified. It is made with demineralised water and organic grain spirits. The botanicals are organic juniper, organic coriander, organic angelica, and organic savory. It has won many awards and medals in International competitions.

Juniper Green has the aroma of a classic, big, London dry gin with lots of juniper and dry spices on the nose- rich, full, and teasingly complex. You wouldn't think that there are only four botanicals in this gin. The juniper and angelica root are up front, buoyed up with the coriander seed, while the savory hides in the back but is definitely present. The aroma is all gin, and a grown up one at that.

The taste is complex, the savory and juniper are most evident, with the angelica and coriander holding it together. It has a musty and almost antique taste, that is very pleasant. Smooth, vibrant, and bold. All the classic gin taste, but with a strong sense of power and strength from the herbs and spices. It seems quite simple at first, but the reality is very complex and dynamic. I don't know why, but the flavor of age and wisdom comes through.

Lately I have been collecting some old and antique books, rare, first publications, and just plain old, old, old. When you open a book whose pages are yellowed with age you get this unique smell where the paper has mellowed over the years and the original wood comes through. It is an antique smell, and one that makes you think of history and famous words put down on paper for all time. I had a piece of a page from a 100 year old book break off the other day. I couldn't repair it and I was slowly crumbling it in my hands. The smell was very powerful. I put a bit in my mouth to taste and it was very intriguing. This is some of what I taste in this gin, a sense of knowledge, wisdom, age, even antiquity.

I like this gin a lot, not for an everyday gin, but for those occasions when you want to sit back and sip something mellow that makes you feel at peace, wise and tranquil.
