Britain's Prince Charles is passionate about food. He is especially interested in organic foods and in healthy eating, and he even has his own company, Duchy Originals, which specializes in organic and other sustainable products. Like others with similar viewpoints, Charles is not a fan of the fast food industry. Unlike others with similar viewpoints, however, Prince Charles seems to have a more radical view of what should be done. He recently suggested that McDonald's be banned.
A spokesman from McDonald's said that the company was "disappointed" by Charles' remarks, and noted that many members of the royal family, including the prince's sons, have eaten at the fast food chain.
Immediately, critics pointed out that many of the foods in the Duchy Originals line were, nutritionally, worse than Big Macs. The organic Duchy Originals Cornish pasty "contains 264 calories per 100g compared to the burger's 229 calories, and 5.5g of saturated fat as opposed to the Big Mac's 4.14g." Funnily, a spokesman for Duchy Originals said that no matter what the nutritional content of their products, good or bad, "It is up to consumers to decide whether to buy them."
Perhaps they think that customers in McDonalds restaurants are tied down and forced to eat french fries.

It looks to me as if the full statement from Duchy Originals was that they, unlike McDonald's, **put nutritional information on their food,** so the consumer can make an informed choice. (Seemingly, the informed choice would be to get a Big Mac, though.)
I would have read the Prince's remark as referring to banning McD in school lunches rather than universally, but it's really hard to tell from the article.

Quite honestly, I wish people would begin to understand that organic food does NOT mean low-fat, low-cal, won't make you fat if you eat too much of it. McD's food is unhealthy for different reasons that the Duchy Originals line.

The world and the culinary landscape would be a far better place without McDonalds as a part of it. Bravo Charlie!

Jenn (#2) is on the money. You can't just point at the calories and say McDonald's is better for you. By that logic, a pile of rocks would be "healthier" than, say, a teaspoonful of sugar; that doesn't make it good food. The emphasis of the Duchy line is on organic and sustainable foods. McD's is no competition in that department.

Thanks Patrick. That phenomenon just totally blows my mind. Sad thing is, corporations like McD's reinforce that type of mentality by saying things like were stated in the article. Hopefully one day they'll understand.
Oh, and Franz... I totally agree. The world would be a better place without McD's, or any other fast food chain of the like. :)

Ugh, I can't believe the elitist tripe I'm reading. Hello, we and the UK live in a Free Market Economy, no one but the consumer should be dictating what companies should or should not exist. Is McDonalds the best food in the world? No but it's easy for Prince Charles to talk about others when he has his own organic farm and probably has never wondered how he's going to pay for something let alone cook a meal for himself. This is the same kind of nonsense Al Gore spews about being environmentally sensitive while racking up a monstrous electric bill on his mansion or jet setting around the country in a private jet. Before you get on your high horse to tell others how to live, make an effort to help people live your supposed better lifestyle. If the prince is all that concerned. I'm sure all the schools would gladly take all the organic produce and meat he would like to donate. Ditto here in the US, should we ditch the headstart meal programs b/c they are not organic?

Well, clearly this is the right response. Don't like something? Clearly, the answer is to ban it. Just ban it all. Anything anybody finds offensive or unhealthy or annoying, just ban it. Because those are the ideals we stand for... if I don't like something, obviously it should be illegal for everybody else because my opinion is the most enlightened and the most important.
But don't you DARE ban that thing you don't like that's important to me!

THis is an interesting concept....perhaps he is suggesting we go back to the "good ol days" of an authoritarian monarchy....that way, With Charles being the KING , he can ban anything he wants.....
I swear.. The kind of people like Franz scare me...if you don't believe in something DONT PARTAKE IN IT, but don't inflict your ideals on the rest of society....maybe some people would rather die and be fat than give up their burger, or heck , there are actually SKINNY people who enjoy eating junk ...ALL you health food freaks are going to die like the rest of us, and YES you may live a "healthier life" bur don't think you are living a superior or more enjoyable one.

i doubt a ban would happen, even if i think it's a good idea. since england is ruled by a monarchy and a parlament that is at its will, the least charles and the royal family can do is force mcd's to fully disclose it's nutritional information, or get out. i'd rather the ppl make an informed decision. of course, mcd's is starting to do that, and they will slam anyone who doesn't follow their suit, right down to organic foods, b/c they feel procescted at having to inform ppl of how crappy they really are. but whatever. i don't eat at mcd's very often b/c one bite of their stuff and i know it's bad for me. when you can taste the grease, you know you need to cut back or cut it out and make something healthier for yourself. what i don't get is that ppl would save ALOT more money if they just cooked for themselves rather then do something quick lil run to the closest drive through.

Having eaten a Big Mack in the UK I can honestly say that it is a disgusting product, not what you get here in the States. The same goes for the "frinch fries." Not the same food, nevertheless let the consumer decide, not government or some dumb "Royal." His taste in food is as poor as his current tast in the women. Enough, let the bloke have his go.
