We've all heard of the Five Second Rule, that food rule that says when you drop a piece of food, as long as you pick it up within five seconds it's still OK to eat. Anything more than five seconds then you should throw it away.
This short film (after the jump) by Sam Lehman shows the two different kinds of the Five Second Rule and how it can be misused. If you drop something on the ground, you have to pick it up within five seconds. However, even if you do pick it up within five seconds, the rule should be thrown out if that food landed in...well, you can see in the video after the jump.
By the way, if you think that a lot of restaurants don't serve you food even after a piece of food has been on the floor for more than five seconds, you're crazy.

If you had observed what I have seen concerning all aspects of food handling, in restaurant kitchen areas, you would never eat in a restaurant, again. Receiving a high health inspection score, simple means those things checked by the inspector during his short visit, obtained a numerical grade. Average inspection last less than one hour. Enjoy your meal.

As far as resturants, the people that say it happens everywhere are right.
I worked in the restaurant business for at least 6 years. Even your nicer places like Red Lobster do it. Especially things like snow and king crab legs. They are in a shell that you don't eat... so the food inside is ok right? Right? Throw it back in the steamer for a minute. The heat really does kill the germs. As far as crumbs and shoe stomping and everything that gets stuck to it, well then I guess it's still stuck on there.
The lesson that needs to be learned here is really for all of the people that repeatedly complain in resturants. Be nice. The movie Waiting is right:
"Never f*** with people who handle your food".
If you are someone who always has something to complain about when you go out to eat, please do watch Waiting ASAP. Thanks. Enjoy your meal!

At all events that hold for clients, we pay close attention to the food services and make it clear to them, that we want everything to be perfect. I once said," Would you serve this plate of food to your bride?"
I wonder how many event planners like me actually take the extra step to make sure that their clients are truly having a meal to remember.

If it don't hurt/kill ya, it will make u stronger (immune system). Even if it is a little crunchy, who cares? You won't die. Get over it! LOL!

She saw a bus boy enter with a heavy tray over his head. Perched on top was a basket of rolls, one fell out and he kicked it across the floor, set the tray down, picked up the roll and put it in the large basket of fresh rolls. I've never eaten a roll since then.

I am 60 years old now, but when i was in high school I work at a restaurant that the five-second rule applied and then some, if a customer did not eat the roll that came with their dinner we were instructed to give it to the next customer, same with the silverware that was not used. And they are still in business.....

I witnessed a "stick o butter" whisked off the floor of the kitchen at Tavern on the Green, NYC. I was "allowed" to pass through the kitchen enroute to another portion of the building when my eye caught this incredible act. I can only reconfirm that if your uncomfortable with this, don't eat out.

There is NO 5-second rule in our home as we have dogs who are underfoot whenever food is around.... you drop food on the floor and they snatch it up in a heartbeat!!! Once when preparing for a party, I dropped a ~8 oz. hunk of teriyaki salmon on the floor, our 2 pound chihuahua fell on it and snarled away the two other, much bigger dogs who also wanted that salmon...... NEVER underestimate the determination of a canine to snatch and guard his food!!!
