Alright, Slashfoodies. The challenge is on. It's Super Bowl week, and one of the things that was so much fun last year this time was exploring each contending teams' city's foods. We couldn't have had a better matchup last year - Seattle (oysters, salmon, Pike's Place Market) vs. Pittsburgh (Polish sausage and pierogi).
This year, Joanne, who will be rooting for the Bears, has it easy with Chicago. I mean come on. She could just talk about not eating foie gras all week! However, while it makes my heart beat with all kinds of love and joy that Peyton Manning will be leading the Colts in the big game, do you know how hard it is to come up with Indianapolis foods instead of say, oh New England Clam Chowder?!?!
So, Slashfoodies, I need your help in putting together some foods that scream "Go Colts!" Please, no horsemeat, okay?

You have to go with Hurst's Hambeens, come on, their 15 Bean Soup and Cajun 15 Bean Soups are classics. www.nkhurst.com
Don't forget, they're the Indiana based company that the stadium authority tried to take their facility by eminent domain. Makes a great story along with GREAT soup. They even throw tailgate partys at the home games...

The characteristic food of central Indiana is the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. Any restaurant worth it's salt in Indianapolis has it on the menu, and it better be twice as big as the bun to be considered authentic.

There's even a documentary about it!
The only other food I would consider 'Hoosier' is cow brain sandwiches. I wouldn't even think of eating one, but many people do.

I vote foie gras, but the general consensus around here seems to be pork tenderloin, anything with corn, brats (boiled in beer, then grilled), and a sugar cream pie that Scott is raving about. Also, don't forget White Castle sliders, Wonder bread, Hubbards and Craven coffee, and even Endangered Species Chocolate -- all Indy based. (And for the higher end soiree, Capriole goat cheese and Collins caviar, both Indiana home grown faves.) Go Colts!

I have to agree with the White Castles. I am born and raised Hoosier who is transplanted to the South. Yes I am one of those "Damn Yankees"! But when we go back to Indy to visit White Castles are always the First thing we eat! In fact we usually stop as soon as we get to town before we get to our relatives house. And Taco bell or Waffle house pale in comparison to White Castles at 3 am after a night of drinking!

Crab cakes. Steamed crabs. Fried soft crab sandwiches. Just what you need to support the BALTIMORE Colts! I don't care how long they've been in Indianapolis, they're still Baltimore's team!

This displaced Hoosier girl says:
Sugar cream pie is one of the best-kept tasty secrets in the world, and seems to be pretty much an only-in-Indiana thing. Maybe make it tart-size for easy eating while game-watching? This is a good recipe, but you should use nutmeg rather than cinnamon for true authenticity.

All those people advocating breaded pork tenderloin as true Hoosier food? They're right.
But don't forget quirky, unfamous Indiana pizza: thin crust, with pepperoni that's ground, not sliced (that's the most important thing). The sauce should have a definite tomato taste, but doesn't have to be bland. And cook it a leetle loonger than you think you should: lower midwesterners like the crispy goodness of browned pepperoni bits and toasty cheese.

Hoosier food? That's easy!!! Most of the previous posts are correct. If I were to pick some traditional Indiana favs I would say...
The Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwich garnished w/ Dill Pickles and Onions
White Castles and Big Red (Late night Indiana tradition)
Hoosier Style Pizza (thin, crispy crust, cut into squares such as Arnie's or Pizza King)
and the ever popular summer time staple, Corn On The Cob dripping w/ butter and salt
and for the sweet stuff...
Sugar Cream Pie or Persimmon Pudding

Don't know if my e-mail made it - Again: 54 sec. left during the last game: My sister in Christ and I "agreed" - that an interception would take place - and there it was!! We, at Lakview Christian Center - pastor Ron Bontrager, minister - are all praying for God's Glory to radiate through you. I told my sister that night that I knew you would do that. You and the owner, publically did it. As a teacher, we cannot talk about our Lord, but God answered my prayers and said through Sports and Hollywood, the believers will openly talk about Him. Thanks and God Bless you tonight. We will continue to pray - not only for your win, but mostly, for God's glory to shine through all of you. Keep your heads held high and don't let any negatives tonight get you down - for God is the most impt. being there!!
