Ed Levine tries Palapa Azul Ice Cream

The Serious Eats peeps have gotten their hands on a video camera and have been putting it to good use in their new 90-second video series called Edibles, which I am thinking is named for the "show's" host, Ed Levine, who calls himself the "Missionary of Deliciousness." Ed's first segment is on Palapa Azul Mexican Ice Cream, in which he tastes Sweet Corn (his favorite), Flan, and Mexican Chocolate flavors. If you like watching someone eat ice cream and rave about it, take a peek.

It tastes like someone broke up some discs of Abuela-brand Mexican hot chocolate product and mixed it into ice cream. I far prefer the "Mayan Chocolate" flavor of Haagen-Dazs. As for the grapefruit bars, the package shows a beautiful Ruby Red-style bar, but the real thing is pale and tastes bitter like Florida grapefruit.

Palapa Azul's packaging is wonderful and I love the company -- read online about the cool way they tested the product! -- but so far, I suspect the product is going over big more for the marketing and the novelty than for actually being that good to eat. I think people WANT to like it, and therefore they do. Personally, I'd like to see P.A. come out with a tamarind ice cream or sorbet like I used to get in Guadalajara at the HeladerĂas Bing stores before they were bought out.

Flan was just okay, the flavor and texture did not stand out to me. I actually like the grainy texture of the mexican chocolate. I think they are definitely worth trying. I do recommend letting your ice cream sit for a little while after scooping. It's a bit dense and flaky straight from the freezer. You can taste the flavors better after letting them soften.
