Cook like a housewife in the 1950s

Well, the rest of my day is shot.

I came across this really cool web site, Retro-Housewife.com. It has a rather daring manifesto:

We spent the 80's and the 90's trying to do it all. Now we are tired, overworked and want to offer a different life plan. We want to stay home, take care of our kids, our husbands and give them the attention they deserve. This site may not be for everyone, but if you want to be a retro housewife, you have come to the right place!

Of course, if that's the only way you look at the site, you're missing out on some truly great content, including a Retro Housewife blog, sections on retro furniture and fashion, and, of course, recipes! After the jump, some cool-sounding meals you've got to try.

This site has a lot of recipes. Boston Baked Beans are a classic, and this might be worth trying the next time you reach for the can on the supermarket shelf. Businessmen's Special has a great name and is really easy to make (any recipe that says "pour tomato soup over everything" is something retro I have to try). Everyone likes a nice Carrot Cake, and Ozark Pudding sounds rather interesting too.

Of course, no retro meal would be complete without a great Champagne Punch. Mmmmmm.

Believe me, these people would DIE if they walked into a real 50's grocery store and saw the limited range of products. I was a kid then, and I remember what we ate.

The columnist explained to 1950s housewives that homemaking really wasn't so bad as it seemed, compared to the drudgery of a woman's other career options, so women should buckle down, stop dreaming of a career or even an office job, and get those toilets scrubbed and cakes baked.

Yep, mom cooked veggies all day long, to death. Yes the variety we have now is better. But for taste I would choose years ago, and forget having baby carrots and swiss chard!
