Starbucks to eliminate trans fats

Starbucks is the latest chain to try to jump on the no-trans fats bandwagon, trying to demonstrate to customers how much they care about health and nutrition. Starting this week, approximately half of the stores in the US, including those in Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Oregon, will have zero trans fats on their menus.

The company says that they have been planning the switch for two years now and that their nationally distributed pastries, primarily seasonal items like the Gingerbread loaf cake, are already trans-fat free. The rest of their pastries are baked by regional bakeries, which Starbucks contracts to provide pastries for their stores. These pastries vary from region to region, as do the recipes for them, so not every supplier has yet made a switch, but Starbucks seems to anticipate that it will not be long before they do.

So, if you're not located in one of the aforementioned areas of the country, does that mean you need to worry about trans fats at Starbucks? Not where drinks are concerned. According to the nutritional information on their website, very few of their drink products contain trans fats and those that do have only a very minimal amount. The pastries, on the other hand, vary widely by region, but judging from a random sampling of regional nutritional data (offered by zip code on the Starbucks website) your best bet will be a muffin or loaf cake if you want to minimize your trans-fat intake without cutting out pastries all together, at least until your area is declared trans-fat free, too.

I didn't know how good coffee flavored drinks could taste until I tasted their iced drinks. Their snacks are great too.

Fantastic!! Thanks Starbucks for helping us stay healthy.

Giving Starbuck's the benefit of doubt sorry, it did not change my mind. I think your coffee is very bitter and leaves like a burnt taste in your mouth after drinking it no matter even if it's just been made and no matter what you put in it. There's is no help. Good for you I guess about your trans-fat idea.Your doing something right. It would be nice to see you change the type of coffee beans that you buy.I hope you have changed also the fact that your decaf coffee is really decaf now!!

They should have some healthy and some not so healthy treats for people who want them. I think what New York City is doing is wrong also. Like with smoking, whether right or wrong, if we want a fatty muffin or cookie, it should be our choice what we eat!

I`ve been reading Moby Dick and finally understand how the socially responsible Starbucks Coffee Shops got the name; I know the story of the founder, from Sixty Minutes. One person said the settings are sterile; not so in my town. A wellness doctor buddy of mine goes there to catch up on back reading; I usually see someone interesting there. A place is no more sterile than the people who are there. . . .Am glad the cinnamon latte is back, and love all the pumpkin stuff. . . Our Starbucks food is from Whole Foods, no complaints there.

I have been complaining for at least 6 years or so. You just couldn't find anything super sweet and greasy. Now, thats not really Northwest. Pressured into it I'm sure.
