I have no idea why this recipe over at Kraft is called Puppy Chow. Does it look like Puppy Chow? Are you supposed to give it to your dog? (Probably not - chocolate is bad for dogs.) But it's a funny name and a really easy recipe, so let's try it:
1/2 cup peanut butter
4 squares of semi-sweet baking chocolate
8 cups Honeycomb corn and oat cereal
2 tablespoons of powdered sugar
Microwave peanut butter and chocolate in large bowl on high for 1 1/2 minutes. Stir until blended. Pour over cereal in bowl and coat evenly. Lay two sheets of aluminum foil on table (make sure long sides overlap). Pour mixture on foil and spread. Let stand for 2 hours. Place sugar in mesh strainer. Shake strainer over mixture and evenly coat.
Not sure what will work best, smooth peanut butter or crunchy. Also, I'm not quite sure why it's important that the two pieces of foil have to overlap?
Check out the comments at the Kraft site for a couple of tips on how to make this even a little easier.

I've always seen Puppy Chow made with Cripix or Chex. Don't think I'd use Honeycomb.
It's supposed to look like puppy chow--hence the name.

I remember when I was a kid and someone (can't remember who) made it for the kids for a Christmas treat. I found a similar recipie last year and tried it. It was pretty good. Instead of Honeycomb, I used Chex cereal, but the Honeycomb do sound good too.

My son makes this all the time as a bakesale fundraiser at his University, and they always sell out no matter how much he seems to make.

We used to make that in my
Girl Scout troop years ago.
I've heard that referred to as
"Puppy Chow", "Trash Mix",
"Garbage", etc. Just depends on
who is making it.

If by "not great" you mean "highly poisonous" than I agree with you. I don't mean to be hyper sensitive but you might want to ammend your article. Chocolate is poisonous for dogs. It's no joke.

I've heard it called puppy chow for as long as I can remember. It is always present at any get together in my town. However, we all use chex and a whole lot more than two tablespoons of powdered sugar. The outsides of my chow are white.
I once got a bowl of puppy chow poured over my head at my 8th grade bday party. That made quite a mess, let me tell you! Powdered sugar does not come out of your hair easily!

Creamy peanut butter is best in Puppy Chow.
Honeycomb is sacriligeous--you must use Chex.
The instructions probably tell you to overlap the pieces of foil so it's harder for the powdered sugar to make friends with your table.

I've always heard of this type of recipe as Muddy Buddies, with Chex. They even have it on the official chex website. The recipe there uses a little vanilla in it as well. Yum!

I've had the Chex-cereal based version, which in the Champlain Valley region of New York went by the even less appetizing moniker of "Muddy Buddies."
