I have no love for Vegemite. It is one of those foods that you really have to grow up with in order to have even slight chance of enjoying it. The processed yeast spread, or a similar product (the debate over the finer points of the products is a heated topic among fans) called Marmite, is most often enjoyed by Australians, New Zealanders, Britons and South Africans although you will occasionally come across an additional handful of people who enjoy it, as well.
Even though I am not a fan, I have no problem with anyone else who chooses to eat it, but unfortunately for anyone who lives in the US, Vegemite does not seem like it is an option anymore. The US has begun to rather strictly enforce a ban on the product due to the fact that it contains folate, which the US allows only to be added to breads and cereals. There have been reports of Vegemite-loving Aussie expats being searched for the product when crossing the US borders and retailers have been asked to stop carrying it in their stores.
So, what is a Vegemite fan to do? Try to find an importer who is still getting their shipments past customs and stock up.

That is an outrage.
Marmite should be available in the USA. It is freakishly delicious.

Vegemite is quite definitely one of those "acquired tastes". Over time, though, I have really grown to like it. I tried it for the first time in 2001, when I visited friends in Australia. Since then, I've been unable to find any locally, but one of my Australian friends has been kind enough (on a few occasions) to mail me some. In fact, at one time she "borrowed" a whole food-service case of the stuff...it was packaged in little containers with peel-off lids (like the syrups and jellies you find at pancake houses).
Fortunately, a little Vegemite goes a long (long!) way.

Marmite and Promite have significantly different tastes to Vegemite.
If you're not familiar with Vegemite, you might mistake one for the other - but they're really different.
I love all the stories of unwitting persons (typically American) trying Vegemite, under the mistaken impression that Vegemite was something chocolaty like Nutella. (Hint: Spread it thin, on buttered toast)
Now I've gotta go spread some Vegemite and Butter on Saos.

Horse.
Foie Gras.
Trans-fats.
Vegemite.
All different scenarios, to be sure, but does anybody still believe this isn't indicative of a national trend?

Sorry guys, but I have to do this for my own personal gain. The land of the free thing is a joke, its really run by corrupt government officials (like me) who destroy and maim the freeedoms of America so I can make some bling-bling. Remember to vote for me in 08!

The US has banned Vegemite because of the folate in it. Does that mean they've also banned the use of the synthetic form, folic acid? If so, you won't be able to get Marmite for much longer as it's got folic acid in it.

We (and by "we" I mean Gourmet food editor Maggie Ruggiero did a little digging on the vegemite issue this afternoon and talked to the F.D.A. about it. They say it has nothing to do with them, there are no import alerst concerning vegemite, and that it's a Kraft/General Foods mistake that has led us to all this confusion. I think I can safely go back to avoiding/ignoring vegemite for years to come.

Update on the Vegemite issue:
As folate is actually an ingredient of Vegemite and NOT added at the end, it is NOT being banned. So no need to risk smuggling the black stuff in! Live dangerously and TRY IT! And try some Tim Tams while you're at it.

I'm confused?? Why is America banning folate! Here in Australia we are introducing it into everything!! (don't tell me...... it's another product gone wrong & they will offload it to the unsuspecting Aussies while they can still make money on it regardless of the consequences!!) And since Johnny Howard & old George are the best of mates (& when the terrorists attack here..thank them both!) why is that happening? Maybe on their next buddy (dopey, ignorant beasts) conference they can have vegemite & grilled cheese sandwiches! Then George might reconsider! (Those of us with brains & in the REAL world know it's a load of crap anyway....& that folate is actually GOOD for you!......& that George Bush & Johnny Howard in twenty years are going to be known as the two leaders who helped screw up the world...or maybe in 2 years!........or as Johnny says..."I won't do it unless someone else does!!!(boo hoo I'm acting like a 5 year old school kid) " in referring to curbing the now factual climate global warming! Oh dear........I think I'll go & make myself vegemite & cheese grilled toast & in the pleasure of eating it, forget it all!!

there is comparison between Vegemite Vs marmite or promite. I would rather go without than sustitute.
