Slashfood's Candy Creations - October 24th

We really like candy here, whether it is a sugary caramel or a decadent box of chocolates, and there is nothing like Halloween to get into the candy spirit. After all, the entire purpose of the holiday is to eat candy! To get into the swing of things before the holiday hit, we decided to host our own day of Candy Creations on Tuesday, October 24th. We'll talk about some of our favorite candies, homemade and store-bought, and offer up some tips on where to find the best candies and what to give out for Halloween. We have lots of treats to give out, but you'll have to be patient!

If you want to join us in our celebration of candy, write a post about your favorite candy, candy recipe or use for candies (sundae toppings, deep fried candy bars, etc) and post about it between now and the 24th. Send us a link to your post and we'll do include it in our roundup that day.

We use to refrigerate it and then smack the package against something hard to break it into little pieces. I wish I knew where to get some today!!

(Put in a baggie and hammer away!). Then melted white chocolate, spread in a pan. Added the corn, and some mini chocolate chips. She loved it!

Every site I saw recalled the memory of freezing it and breaking it into small pieces! http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=9575&itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=9575&searchid=inceptor&searchid=inceptor

And they ARE still available - I see them all the time in the Dollar Store and think - yummmmmm... they are great in the freezer... :o) And what might make them BETTER than Turkish Taffy is the fact that they are covered in CHOCOLATE!!! Can't go wrong there!!!

When I was younger, my sister and I used to make "Starburst People" . We'd roll the starburst until they were plyable, then shape them into people (sort of looked like weebles). We'd make eyes and mouths and accessories out of other colors and then stick them on. We always said we couldn't eat them now that they were people, but usually broke down and ate them anyway. :o)

Did you know that when this candy bar was originally sold in the 1930's it was very different than today? My Dad told me when he was a kid in the 30's a Three Musketeers bar was THREE flavors - in THREE different sections put together, covered in chocolate.
Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry!
Hence the name.....THREE Musketeers. ;) True!
Hey MARS Company...do this again!

I've bought stuff from Vermont Country store too. Great place to get all the candy and other things we remember as kids.

I wish they'd make them again!!

I absolutely hate all this gummy junk that has replaced the jel type candies. The jel types were great, like the "toys" and "red coins" and the seasonal kinds, like the "rabbits" at Easter time and the red, green and white bells at Christmas. Why did they replace the good candies with this soft gummy gunk?

The different penny candies that Brachs used to sell by the pound in the dime stores, before they disappeared, were delish! Can't find those in Chicago anymore.

I would like to see mellowcreams all year round.

Candy is a big disappointment now. Yes, chocolate is yummy, but not so good for the waistline.

My favorite is chocolte covered peanut butter balls or cups, it only takes 1/2 cup peanut butter, 3 tbs softened butter, 1 cup sifted powdered sugar, and 8 ounceschocolate flavored candy coating, white chocolate is really good. Just mix, put in the fridge for 20 mins, then roll into balls and coat with mealted chocolate. For the cups put mealted chocolate in a baking cup, on the bottom and half way up the sides making a cup then when thats set put in the peanut butter and top with more chocolate. they make great gifts for the holidays

Those seem to only come out around Halloween. The bottles are one of my youngest daughters favs! Oh the days of the corner candy store, they are no more :^(

Wax lips. the wax bottles, they have two taffy ones, and one of them even says its like the Turkish taffy,
they even have the candy cigarettes, there are tons of old fashioned candies here.
I remember so many of them. Rock Candy, chick-o-stick,the Gold Rush Gum in a little bag, the caramel with the white cream in the middle...YUM....alot is there. Be sure and check it out, OH they also have the REAL licorice pipes....for those that love real licorice/ I do have another site that sells the pipes in a big box. If anyone wants that site, write to me at vicscavies@aol.com and ill be happy to send it off to you,
