Zingerman's Guide to Good Eating, Cookbook of the Day

In all fairness, Zingerman's Guide to Good Eating is not really a cookbook, though there are a few recipes scattered throughout its pages. It is a book for cooks. Its subtitle promises that it will tell you "How to Choose the Best Bread, Cheeses, Olive Oil, Pasta, Chocolate, and Much More" and it is one of the best, easiest to read guides you can find, and will be useful, or at least enjoyable, to anyone interested in learning more about the specifics of some important food groups. The groups are not those found on the periodic table, but are certainly obvious in the kitchens of those who love to cook.

It starts out with oilve oils, nut oils and vinegars, moving into grains, cheeses, meats and seasonings. It finishes with a section on honey, vanilla, chocolate and tea, as well as providing a handy guide to mail-order sources for the products they mention. The book's structure is such that it provides far more than brand names and selection tips. It has the history and production of a food, and tries to at least quickly visit each of its potential uses. The casual style that it is written in makes it a very pleasurable read, and a good gift for any would-be foodies in your life, yourself included.

As great as the book is, it pales in comparison to the knowledge and enthusiasm of the foodies at the deli.

It's not cheap.

It is an interesting place.

It's not fast service, at least for their deli.

It is delicious.

Your sandwich is not worth 12 dollars.

Your sandwich is worth a lot more than the 3.95 you'd pay at Jimmy John's.

I'm a former Ann Arborite as well, my ex-roomate is the cheese buyer for Zingerman's!

Yes, Zingerman's is pricey, and if I can find things cheaper elsewhere then I will buy them elsewhere. However, that's Zingerman's strength... it's pretty rare that I actually CAN find what Zing has to offer anywhere else, and that includes here in the San Francisco Bay area.

They also let you sample almost anything in the store (around 95% of what they have to offer). This ends up making for a really special place - you can go and try Mexico's best vanilla, follow it with a rare French cheese (or an even rarer Tiben Yak cheese), pick up some Moroccan pepper corns, and the world's best apple wood-smoked bacon, all under one roof. The parting and sampling of these foods also adds to the costs.

Oh, there making money alright, but that's ok to me - they're an amazing place that has taught me a lot about food (fortunately, hands-on training!), and they have excellent, highly-informed customer service.

I definitely encourage a drop-by if you're anywhere near the area. I'm happy to report that I'll be back there in a month.

Best to all,
Oscar

My experience with the company is strictly mail order (I'm an SF Bay Area native, and have never been to Ann Arbor), but I have never been disappointed in either product quality or the lightning-quick, helpful, convivial response to any question/comment (via e-mail or phone) I've had. Well worth paying a little extra for the personal touch.
