Maybe they just really, really like blueberries. In the Canadian city of Abbotsford, thieves made off with 20,000 blueberry bushes earlier this week. The bushes were delivered to a farmer who intended to plant them, but when his workers showed up, the bushes were gone.
Now, why the thieves would steal blueberries is a mystery, but it's certainly reasonable to assume that they were thinking of money. Since news of blueberries' health benefits have been in the media, berries are in high demand. The thieves could probably sell the bushes to another farmer. According to Marc Sweeney, the blueberry bushes will "end up on one of several new blueberry farms in the local Fraser Valley."
But the real question in my mind is how the blueberry burglars made off with 20,000 bushes. I don't know how big the bushes were, but 20,000 sure sounds like it would be quite a bit of volume.

Ottawa is the capital city of Canada and not a province. The incident occurred in the city of Abbotsford, in the westernmost province of British Columbia.

Perhaps they were rooted cuttings for starting a new field. I would think those would be a lot easier to run off with than 20,000 full-sized bushes. Still, when I think about how much I love blueberries, I could understand the motivation!

Hah!
The last apartment that I had near Detroit, someone stole a houseplant off of my front porch. This caused a surprising amount of reflection. In one sense, I was especially indignant, as I am very attached to my plants. They're definitely a personal item for me, rather than commodity or decoration. But at the same time, I was rather excited about the idea that, of all things, PLANTS would be prized enough to be worthy of theft.
If I were a plant theft, I'd steal japanese maples, and plum trees. *Note*, theft is wrong, don't try it at home kids.
Best to all,
Oscar

This reminds me of reports I've been hearing recenly (here in Australia), of banana rustling.
Since Cyclone Larry hit north Queensland and wiped out 90% of Australia's commercial crop, the price of bananas has skyrocketed (from about A$2.99 to A$15.99 / kg). Meaning there's cash to be made by unscrupulous banana thieves.
