A childhood staple and an adult favorite, the peanut butter sandwich has a special place in all of our hearts and stomachs. The sandwich rose to popularity during WWII, due to rationing at home and its inclusion in the meals of soldiers. The sticky sandwich long outlasted the war and is consumed in 89 percent of U.S. households. Here are eight of the most popular sandwiches that peanut butter is used in.
Fluffernutters - A gooey, sticky combination of peanut butter and marshmallow that has been a source of controversy this year, but is a firm favorite with anyone who likes marshmallow.
Peanut butter, banana and honey - Also known as a PBH, Cafe Intermezzo in Berkeley, California makes a fantastic version of this sandwich on homemade bread.
Peanut butter and bacon - The variant on this is peanut butter and baloney. People will put bacon on anything.
Fried peanut butter and banana - Often said to be Elvis's favorite, though he was known to eat peanut butter and cheese and the aforementioned peanut butter and bacon, too.
Peanut Butter, mayo and fried egg - The combination may sound odd if you've never heard of it before, but peanut butter and mayo is still popular in many parts of the country. There's a recipe here.
Peanut butter and pickles - This one sounds like an urban legend, one attributed to the cravings of pregnant women, because the combination is an odd one, but it comes up again and again.
Nutter butters - These are sandwich cookies made with peanut butter and come shaped like peanuts. They're maddeningly addictive and an excellent follow-up to a non-cookie sandwich.
Peanut butter and jelly - No list would be complete without the classic. The type of jam, jelly or preserves is entirely up to you, though I would recommend strawberry to first-timers.
And, if anyone has peanut allergies, try using other nut butters or non-nut butters with any of these combinations, or try coming up with your own. Put all of your favorites in the comments!

My favorite is a blop of Peanut Butter (creamy or crunchy, your choice) in the middle of a plate, pour on enough maple suryp to mix into a medium mixture. Take a hot biscut, break off a piece and drag it through the middle of the mixture, lean over the plate and poke that morsul in your mouth and feel the big smile come across your lips as you have found the best desert ever. Makes you wanta yell "Eureka" (I have found it). Happy eating.

They are delicious! I use only good kosher dills, so the contrast of sweet/sour and gooey/crunch is pronounced. Now I find I do "crave" them when I'm stressed out...

Also, I think the schools have gone tooo far in banning P.B. from the school not just the menu! I dont think everyone out there can afford lunchmeat everyday for large families. Is this another form of Government control???

12-12-2006 @10:09PM Chris said... In the 1970's, my mom used to make peanut butter, pickles, mayonnaise, and cheese sandwiches. Its best prepared with the mayonnaise on one bread slice and the peanut butter on the other. Place dill pickle slices on top of the PB and Tillamook medium cheddar cheese (don't use cheese spread or processed slices) on the mayonnaise. Put the two slices together and enjoy. I am still eating it 36 years later.
