Ben & Jerry's has just announced the top five finalists in their Do Us A Flavor contest and is now going to set about narrowing down the field to one winner. All totaled, there were about 40,000 entries in the contest - a remarkable number considering that the contest was only advertised online - including the Cannoli flavor that we saw here. The finalists will have to make up their flavors for the judges in October, just as the Haagen-Dazs finalists had to when they competed to design a new flavor. The judging will be done by "the company's flavor gurus" and the final flavors are:
- ApricotAbra - a mix of vanilla and apricot preserves
- Wackie Chan - Sweet cream and ginger-flavored ice cream, with chocolate-covered fortune cookie bits and fudge swirl
- Italian Renaissance - Amaretto ice cream, cherry chunks and sliced almonds
- Mojito - Lime-based sherbet with mint, brown sugar and rum
- Puttin' on a Ritz - Vanilla ice cream, caramel and Ritz crackers
Wackie Chan really seems to fit in with a lot of the company's other flavors, not to mention that the name is reminiscent of other famous-figure flavors, like Cherry Garcia. Mojito seems like it would be a refreshing contrast to some of the other flavors and the Ritz combination sounds like it sprang from someone's idea of comfort food. Which flavor do you think will make it into the stores?

the Italian or Ritz sound good to me. I vote no on Wackie Chan. Maybe it's unfair, but I had a ginger martini this summer that is making me think no on the ginger ice cream.

Wacky Chan! Ginger is "in," plus it has the mix-in style that B&J is known for, including the all-important (a) ripples of something smushy and (b) gratuitous covering of something with chocolate. I'd buy it, too.

Wackie Chan sounds SO freaking good. I LOVE ginger ice cream and the fortune cookie bits are a good twist to the usual, cookies, graham or brownie bits etc.. etc..

Mojito sounds awesome on paper, but in reality, it'd probably just taste like a sweet lime sherbet... not that there's anything wrong with that. Wackie Chan, on the other hand, sounds fantastic.

Wackie Chan has my vote. The ginger will give it a little heat which is interesting. Heat with chocolate is very delicious so that sounds like a winner to me. Now if they would only bring back Rainforest Crunch!

I remember about ten years ago B&J had a flavor in their scoop shops called "Ginger and Fred," which was a ginger-flavored ice cream with chocolate swirl. It was incredible. So I absolutely vote for Wackie Chan.

my favorite home mix is sprinkling ginger powder over vanilla and adding either coffee or hazlenut creamer or coconut. I love cherries and anything amaretto is awesome. can't they do both?
