Eating contests not all fun and games

A 32-year-old woman in Canada was participating in a Chubby Bunny contest, a game in which participants attempt to stuff as many marshmallows into their mouths as possible and still say "chubby bunny." It is often played by children at camps and sleepovers and, more often than not, all efforts subside into laughter after about the fourth or fifth mallow. Adults take these things more seriously, however, and instead of ending up laughing, the above-mentioned woman ended up in critical condition at a London, Ontario hospital after choking on a marshmallow. The contest was already over and she was walking backstage when she collapsed. She had no vital signs when the paramedics got to her and is currently in critical condition.

The future of Chubby Bunny contests at this fair are seriously in doubt, as it may be in other venues since this is not an isolated incident, and it is possible that other food-events will be more closely monitored in the future ,a reminder to all competitive eaters that chewing your food could potentially be far more important than winning.

Update: Unfortunately, the woman did not recover from the incident.

I see this as the first step in another removal of our freedom of choice. If we can't decide if "chubby bunny" is right for the individual, then we will allow legislation to come in and decide for us all. I personally don't want to live in a country that has taken the rights away from it's people to stuff as many marshmallows in his or her mouths while chanting "chubby bunny" aloud over and over until he choke to death or concede failure. People we have to make a stand. The high standard by which way we judge life's quality may be at risk here. How will we be able to look our grandchildren in the eye and tell them we did nothing to stop this travesty from happening? REMEMBER THIS: These times will the not be judged by perpetrators of this heinous act, but by the good people who stood around and did nothing. The decision is your to make. God be with us all. If you or a loved one has been dramatically effected by this horror, A toll free help line has been setup for those that feel suicide is there only option. 1 800 968-3465,… OR DIAL YOU-DINK. Have faith, God will see us through these dark days ahead.

Gluttony (Latin, gula)
: Gluttony (waste, overindulgence)
Modern views identify Gluttony as being associated with an overindulgence of food and drink, though in the past any form of thoughtless excess could fall within the definition of this sin. Marked by a refusal to share resources and unreasonable or unnecessary consumption, Gluttony could also include certain forms of destructive behaviour, especially for sport (like trophy hunting), substance abuse or binge drinking. The definition for Gluttony has the word “overindulgence” in it, so therefore, Gluttony could be overindulgence in any one thing (not just food).

I can just see a parent reaching back and giving their toddler one, sitting in the car seat, and after going down the road awhile, the little one choking. I've always thought what a dumb thing for Sonic to give their customers 'cos you know the kids want the candy!!! My kids/grandkids never get Sonic's hard candy, I throw it away. Not worth a possible choking incident!!

If it's your belief that they must be idiots, then let the rules of Darwin take effect. How many people die from severe peanut allergies every year? Should we eliminate peanuts from the face of the earth? How many people have choked on balloons? You cannot legislate everything that has the potential to be deadly. The contestants in these events make a conscious decision to participate.

As an aside to the EMT, I think a better guess is that she just vomited up a whole marshmallow that hadn't made it all the way down as she reached her saturation point and then aspirated it. Hot anything would have melted the marshmallow and it's likely the stomach acids would have deteriorated it.

When it is your time your checking out no matter if you have a mouthful of marshmellows, sitting on a plane or sitting on your toilet,(Elvis)..death isn't discriminatory..we are all heading thru the great revolving door ssome day. I would rather say I had fun with life, giggled a little, was childish and fun at times than to be held hostage and afraid to have fun by liberals who think everything should be banned, I guess now there should be warning labels placed on packaging of marshmellows, and in a few years there will be a rated B horror movie of the Marshmellows from the damned..the killer chubby bunnies, or lifetime will do another tear jerking chick flick and have a red lettered warning at the end opf the horrid dangers of eating contests..Enjoy life while you have one, make the best of it.llive laugh love and chow down on marshmellows. My condolensces go out to her family, saonds as though she was a fun loving gal.

Yes, it's sad this woman died due to this childrens game, but remember, she entered the contest, she knew the consequences and she was 32!!!! Let people make their own decisions and let natural selection take care of everything!

However, if an adult wants to stuff their pie hole full of marshmallows or hotdogs or pancakes I say go for it! We already have far to many regulations on our freedoms as is I don't think the government needs to stop food eating contests. Next thing you know they will take away goose liver from us. Oh yeah, that's right, they already did.

It seems who ever is in charge of games, contests, etc.for events, should actually have more than a 10 year old mentality! But then of course, the general public is of the same mix. Someone needs to raise the bar a bit. We're starting to look and act like total morons. Animals don't even go out of there way to indulge in stupid games and waste their resources.
VERY unfortumate and sad for this woman. However,do you think it will end? I highly doubt it. We need to be pelted over and over again before we actually face up to the risk. After-all, there are too many Marti's in this world... We all need to get a life!!

Personally ... I'm not in favor of these kinds of contests. People that eat that much at one time and win a contest have probably "practiced" by having bad dietary habits at other times ...risking heart disease, stroke and who knows what else. I'd like to see a contest for who can eat most SENSIBLY. Sorry, I'm NOT insulting fat people (I'm a bit overweight myself!)but encouraging this sort of thing is a public health problem. Eating disorders are serious business and the "chubby bunnies" mentioned need help ...
