The British kitchen equipment firm Kenwood conducted a study that found that 33% of Britons have never cooked a meal. While it's safe to assume that beans on toast doesn't constitute "from scratch" cooking, they didn't specify what level of culinary proficiency was needed to qualify, although they noted that only 34% cook completely from scratch, so there was clearly a middle ground that was taken into account. Cooking aside, it is difficult to ignore the fact that most of their survey respondents said that they prefer to bring in all or part of a meal, rather than cooking it themselves, and that 7 in 10 spend less than one hour on each meal they make.
A nutritionist who analyzed the results said that cooking is perceived as taking time, effort and money, but the fact that 5 in 10 people said they were "happy to spend £100 or more on a meal out" suggests that perhaps people really just don't like to cook -or even that they simply can't, despite the popularity of food programming on TV - rather than that they feel they are spending too much time or money when they do.

There's a story about a Brit couple visiting the London zoo and watching a mother owl and her hatchlings. The mother swooped down, grabbed a mouse and proceeded to tear it apart to feed the youngsters.
The hubby turned to the wife and said "Look dear, they're eating better than we do"

They probably did go to a themed resturant that doesn't serve traditional fare. And aside from the US they're right up there with the overweight problem, but their food doesn't even taste good..I think the entire modern world needs a nutritional makeover....

I'm a Southern girl who married a Brit in the Bahamas 19 years ago and learned to cook British comfort food only by his descriptions, as very few of the ex-pats there cooked. I wasn't told that it should be bland, so it wasn't. Meat pies, Scottish eggs, even bangers and mash are delicious when creatively spiced or herbed. I think the Brits have some good food concepts, they just have to learn to kick it up a notch.

The range of fresh ingredients is good (if you're prepared to go to the market or farmers market) and you can have some amazing dining out experiences. You can have some awful ones too, but I'm sure that's the case with anywhere.
My one criticism would be that food in the UK is expensive - but that's ALL food, including the nasty takeaway burgers!

Likewise with the food... I can name a list of good British food...can you name a list of good American food? Pearls before swine.

Anyone who thinks that "Brit food" is universally horrible has not visited the UK in the last 10 years, or, if they did, stuck very carefully to junk food throughout. London competes with anywhere in the world for culinary excellence. True, it's difficult to find fresh vegetables when eating out cheaply in north-west Scotland, but anywhere else in the UK provinces you can find fantastic local produce cooked well, as long as you use some intelligence. Now comparing that with the mid-west US.......
